Eat what you kill on the mountain!

Many years we took bamboo shiskabob sticks with us to moose and caribou camp. Cut up chunks of loin, season, skewer with onion and pepper chunks and roast over the fire......no dishes....no mess.

Moose heart steaks w/ onions and peppers.

Also had moose heart fajitas, moose heart cheese steaks, and moose tongue sandwiches this year. Good stuff!

Got in trouble with the kids for not bringing any heart home though.

Snowshoe hare, deboned, fried in bacon grease, and eaten on a tortilla at 12,500ft in the backcountry.

You guys have way too good a setup! On our back pack hunts we don't have room for pots and pans so we just cook it on a stick over open flame. This is sambar backstrap

You guys are killing me. It's 8 in the morning and I'm ready for dinner. Game meat........it's not just for dinner anymore. Makes me want to dig a pit in the back yard, cut a stick, and start cooking. Still processing my elk so it wouldn't be difficult. Hmmmmmm.......

What is the taste comparable to?

It has a flavor of its own and actually, wasn't all that bad-----wee bit stringy. After 5 days of backpacking food, it was a welcome treat and thank god, I didn't have to eat pilot bread.

You know, sauteed heart is a good snack while cutting up the rest of the meat.
