Checking in from Maryland.
East Coast born and raised, been trying to get out west, but haven't succeeded yet!
Love everything outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking...My home area consists of the "Tri-State Area" (Phineas and Ferb reference for those with kids) Mainly Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia. Love it (not Maryland), but am missing the mountains of Oregon and Idaho I visited a few times while on forest fire assignments.

Found this site while planning our Elk hunt for this October, lots of great information and I'm sure I'll have many questions for the masses.

Question for those local to Washington DC, is there any place I can go to try packs out? Cabelas is up in PA, a few hours out and for the life of me, I cannot think of any decent places to go. We have REI around, but I am not looking for the types of packs they carry as there aren't many frame type packs for hauling heavy loads.

I live 20 mins from the PA cabelas there aren't many hunting packs to try on. They have the cabelas frame packs and some badlands stuff. There are a few hiking packs as well.

Crabby,

REI carries Gregory and Osprey packs which will hold heavy weights. Look at the ones that are 100 liters or more. Also, there is another Cabelas in Newark, DE that might be closer than the one in Hamburg, PA. Bass Pro has stores in MD and in VA that you might want to check out. My best advice would be to call the REI, EMS, Cabelas, Bass Pro, and Gander Mountain stores in MD/VA/PA/WV/DE and ask what brands they carry in packs to narrow down your list of where you might want to take a day trip to.

Also, you could could start a thread here on Rokslide or over on Kifaruforums.Net and ask if there is anyone within a four hour drive of DC that has packs that you could look at and try on. You may be surprised at how many folks there may be in the area. I have one of the original KUIU ICON 6000s you can check out if you want to swing by Annapolis some day. They have improved the frame and suspension since it came out a few years ago, but you can feel the carbon fiber frame and see the material they use.

Thanks for the offer Larry, I may take you up on the offer, I'm about 30 minutes from Annapolis
