Looking for a drop camp for next year for two of us. Looking to do a rifle hunt where tags are easier to get in Idaho, Montana, or Colorado. Any advice is very appreciated!

Have you used them? What info can ya tell me?

Have drop camps in both wilderness and proposed wilderness areas (All non motorized travel) OTC archery, 2nd 3rd Rifle Bull, usually 1 PP draw for 1st Rifle and 2nd 3rd cow. Have quite a few camp options to fit a groups hunting styles, conditioning, ect

Do you have any points in CO?

I haven't met any of the guides in the past few years that work there, but they were nicer than their competitor.

I know where a lot of their camps are and have hunted and camped near where they put their guys. I'm as familiar with the general area as most and there isn't a lot of big bulls there, a few, but not many.

Lots of hunters though, weekend warriors and locals. Its an OTC unit so...well except for 1st season.

Is it fair to say people should set their general expectations for raghorns for most of the OTC units?

Doc, that is a good rule of thumb if you consistently want to fill the freezer. There are bigger bulls, of course, but every area has more ragheads than mature bulls. Even swatting a cow, if legal, is not a bad choice. I don't think cows get enough credit as a learning tool early in an elk hunters education. A tasty learning tool.

Once you have hunted a unit for a few years, I think your expectations may change, but early on, shoot the first thing you get a legit shot at. As you hunt an area more and more, you'll get more encounters with larger bulls, and start to figure them out. That said, a larger bull may be a big 5X5, or small 6. Management plan dictates herd age structure.

I am definitely not concerned with trophy potential with whatever outfitter I go with. I just want a good hunt for my brother and I, and hope to get into some elk, cows, raghorns, doesn’t matter to us!

Yes, but like what was said above, time in the woods (learning the actual area you are in) and elk hunting expereince in general, will put you in a better position to kill bigger bull.
