I was lucky enough to draw the mule deer tag for BBSP. Has anybody hunted the park before? I never have been that far west? What size of mule deer are around the park? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I hunted next door outside of Presidio. It isn’t overrun with deer. The deer don’t rely on water near as much as you would imagine and they can do a loop every 3-4 days. Patience and scouting is key. Season is pre-rut which adds some additional difficulty. Most of success is either luck or walking arroyos and tossing rocks until you jump a buck.

Spoke with the game warden in the area when I hunted it and he said season is never really closed for the locals. All that said I’m jealous because it’s such beautiful country.

Beautiful picture!!! Thanks for the reply. I'm a little worried about the weather since we haven't had a freeze yet. Looks like it will be lows in the 40s and highs in the 70's.

Oh man, beautiful country. Did the Black Gap WMA predator hunt last season and didn't take anything but enjoyed the experience immensely. The stars are insane. Profile pic from that hunt as well.

Man I’m super jealous that part of the state is awesome, especially the mountains. Looks like I will be putting in for this hunt from now on as well. Good luck man I hope you get something.

A buddy of mine killed a decent 4x4 over there last year after waiting for like 20 years to draw. Not huge or anything, just surprised me. I couldn't find a picture. I think he kinda got lucky, which I think on a basically 3 day hunt kinda has to happen. I'd hike ridges and glass into shady spots.

Thanks for the info! Im headed out Sunday the 1st to go give it a try. With some of the rules they have in place and not having any compartments in the thicker, more secluded areas almost makes it seem they don't want you to kill one. Ill let you know how it goes.

I am pretty certain that the TPWD could care less if youn killed something. They would prefer no one enjoyed that land at all so they could sell it to a private buyer, if one existed.

Fun fact I used to work at a far west state park property where we did some hunts. An old timer I worked with told me back in the day the cartel was flying in plane loads of coke and landing in Big Bend Ranch on some of the remote landing strips out there. I got a pretty good laugh out of that.
