Dream build - Custom Kimber 6x45

This has been a bucket list build ever since I first built a rifle chamber in 6x45 back in 2010. Since my first build, I have helped build seven other 6x45s on various actions. My first build was on a Tikka action and I built on 700s, Tikkas, and one Remington Seven. I have always wanted to build one based on a Kimber Montana but finding one in .223 has been difficult to say the least. A couple months back I was able to pick up a .223 Montana from the classifieds and I was able to start my build.

My goal was to have a “heavy” barrel rifle that didn’t weigh 10lbs fully setup. I found a Krieger 9 twist barrel and had my gunsmith turn it down to my specs, finished at 20” with a .725” muzzle diameter. The finished product is everything I hoped it would be. The rifle balances perfectly, even with the suppressor and like all the rest, it shoots amazing. I have been able to take two deer already this year with the rifle and no surprise to me, the 87 Vmax is an amazing deer killer.

The stock cuff is made by Hill People Gear. It’s kinda stretchy material and it’s easily the best cuff I’ve ever used.

Nice. Thanks for the report on the 87 Vmax. Mine current one groups well with those, better with the old Sierra 85gr flat base. I’m a real fan of the cartridge.

I originally tried the 87 V-max on deer filling crop damage permits. Everyone in our group was amazed by how well that bullet performed. Almost always exited and deer don’t go far if they do run. This is the cartridge/bullet combo that changed our minds about what it takes to kill deer.

What kind of velocity are you getting with the 87 VMax in your 6x45?
I've debated using them in the 6 creed, figure my 20" barrel would get them around 3,100 at the muzzle.

I get 2670 average. Bolt gun, 16” X-Caliber CF barrel, 9 twist, CFE223 powder.

My 6x45 is an XP100 pistol, I was just shooting it today. I have a slow twist barrel so the heaviest bullet I have had any luck with so far is the Sierra 80 grain Blitz hopefully I get to try it on a deer next weekend.

6x45 is an easy chambering to love ! My 18" 1:7" 3 groove Pacnor load for Moly 87Vmax, Benchmark 26.6gr, CCI400, ADI brass, Avg velocity 2922fps... Though I only run Moly 105 Amax, H4895 24.5gr, CCI400, ADI brass, for an Avg velocity of 2594fps and dick nothing ES/SD... Hard not to love better than 100fps + per grain of powder with Viscous terminal affects...

26.5 grains of IMR8208 pushes the 87 V-max to 2900 fps. This has been “the load” for all of the 6x45s I have loaded for. My 6x45ai shoot the same exact load at the same speed.
