I used Toprut for years and it wasn’t perfect but it worked for me. The state of New Mexico is the “red haired, freckle faced stepchild” of the Western Hunting World where Outfitters are handed the vast majority of big game tags. Therefore not very many tags get into the public draw. Residents are seldom drawn for tags simply because the draw odds are extremely low based on very few tags in the draw to begin with. The “fly by night” Fish and Game Dept. is supported by an anti-hunting State Legislature and Governor. The existing draw odds apps for the most part are quite inaccurate for New Mexico simply because information is either not collected, or when the data does exist, is not disseminated to the public in some cases. I am not trying to get into a political joust just putting out the facts.

Obviously if i want to hunt every year, I need to start putting in for other states. My question is, is there any simple tabular type draw odds apps out there that have good searches and are accurate? OnX Research tools, Huntin’ Fool and GoHunt are not under my consideration. Colorado, Wyoming and Montana are my primary concerns. I just want to hunt.

Wyoming posts their odds, no need to buy anything.
Toprut bought the NM database when Steve C owned it, I believe Gohunt does also. Hunters Trailhead, I have no idea but even buying that database only gets you last years data, and even that won't be precise because NM won't release their specific random number generator nor their draw code.

Onx bought Toprut and basically did away with it and put their own tool out there. I will keep using their maps but the research tools just don’t make the grade in my opinion. I am not overly impressed with the others either. I will check out trailhead.

Any updates or reviews to share? I have OnX Elite, and GoHunt, which the latter I probably purchased thinking it would be worth the value, but I’m not (yet?) overly impressed with its features, and still use OnX for maps.

You cannot estimate or predict the "odds" in the NM draw, not even with the famed Monte Carlo simulation.

You can make the results of the simulation produce the outcomes you want based on manipulating the assumptions (which is how they suck you into trusting them that use it) and, you can get a complete bogus result by choosing the wrong assumptions.

NM draw is simply a snapshot of 1) how many tags went to what choice ranking and 2) the likelihood you will pull a tag based on whether you put it as a choice.

Too many OTC tags to worry about jumping in to the points games IMO
NM doesn’t have preference points.

In New Mexico it’s all about paying an outfitter’s ransom. We have landowner tags sold over the counter to the highest bidding non-residents for ELk, Pronghorn and Mule deer. If you have enough money, you can buy those tags at will. They typically won’t sell to residents though. Once in a while a resident can get a last minute cancellation but you better know someone. Anyone that tells you any different is a liar or a troll. But just know there isn’t much game left here. The trophy elk units for the most part are no longer. The mule deer are gone in many units as well as the pronghorn. Some blame it on drought, others blame it on fragmented habitats, others blame predators, yet non-resident bullets keep flying.

In another thread I posted about the draw odds for this year in New Mexico. The odds in the public draw are very low for residents and non-residents as well. Half of what they were a year ago. The E-plus system has unit wide landowner tags that can be used to hunt elk on any public lands. This has ruined our elk hunting. Most of the data is all there now for tag allocations and it is dismal.

In this day and age, with all of the scientific wildlife management tools available, there shouldn’t be any big game OTC for non-residents in any state. Residents pay the lion’s share of their state’s wildlife management costs; they should get the first opportunity. Good luck in the public lottery that has a few tags.

Since then I have found Base Map Hunt planner and Eastmans Taghub have fairly accurate draw odds for New Mexico
