How can you be certain? Is it not possible that three parties were involved? First party gut shot elk. Second party stumbles upon elk (just as you did), cuts antlers off and leaves. And you show up as third party.
That could 100% be the case.

Curious can you tell if those antlers were broken before the fighting, or if they were probably full horns that animals chewed on until you found them. One for sure looks bulged like it grew that way.
Both bulls are chewed on a bit and it doesn't look like any tines broke during the fight. The typical is a little bulgy at the tips but he's fairly normal for a raghorn.

The other bull is definitely clubbed out at the end of each beam. Something went wild on his right antler, it's growing in every which way. It's possible he favored fighting with his left antler for that reason and that had some part in the lock.

I worked at the 6666's in the late 80's and they had 2 big whitetail bucks mounted in a corner of the big house that were locked together. I don't remember the full story about them.

Not exactly the same but about 12 yrs ago a friend and I shot 2 locked bulls. One had an eye guard in his neck. They were going to die anyway.

Good thing you had two tags! Is that how they were locked when you found them? How did you guys do the mount(s)?

Yes, I shot the first one, and had a heck of a time finding someone who was available to come shoot the second one. Even after they were clean there was only about an 1/8th inch of play between them.
I tried to give them to cabelas for the store they were about to open in Missoula but they weren’t big enough.
