I'm trying real hard to talk myself out of spending that kind of money on a tripod but they always have pretty stellar reviews. I want to know if anyone genuinely prefers something else that has used one?

I've been told by a few that may or may not post that they prefer the Slik over it. I've never used one though.

I like carbon over the outdoorsman.

There are some nice tripods out there, that don't have the gitzo or really right stuff name attached.

The panheads are good, I think the tripods are extremely overrated for the cost. I personally don't like the spike feet either, as I use my tripods a lot of places, not just on the mountain. I had a medium and sent it back almost immediately.
They are very well built though, I will say that.

I don't agree with the aluminum is better in case it breaks crowd. If your tripod leg is jacked up it's not going to work. Wether it's carbon or aluminum.

Carbon beats aluminum hands down in a tripod. Carbon is lighter and has better vibration dampening. The slick 624 and 634 twist lock sold by S&S Archery are hard to beat for the money. S&S are the only ones who have the old style twist lock which are lighter than the new style snap locks. I have the Oben CT 2331 and love it for weight but hate its collapsed lenght. I haven't hated the length enough to find a replacement yet. If you will always be sitting when using a tripod then the 624 Slik is hard to beat for the money. I certainly couldn't justify a Gitzo gt 0 series over the Slik or the Oben for the price.

My slik 634 has been great, I was in the same boat as you and decided to go slik based on reviews and couldn't be happier.

This is the kind of question that keeps us going, keeps the stores in business, and keeps the Classifieds full on here. The old "but what if this one is better" question. I'll admit it......I've asked myself that exact same question as well about the Outdoorsman. I've had the Slik 634 about 5 years now.

My buddy has the outdoorsman tripod. I didn't like it at all when I tried it. It's been 6 years since I used it so maybe they improved in that time

Interesting I expected this to be more weighted towards the outdoorsman similar to the way it is with swarovski. You don't hardly ever hear someone say they don't like swarovski just question it cost to benefit.

Shooting long range, I've used and borrowed a lot of tripods. The only lightweight tripod I would trade my two sliks for is the Gitzo traveler

I have had both and have the slik 634 with the outdoorsmans mini pan head----it is an outstanding setup. I never look at anything else when it comes to tripods.

Holy crap and I thought outdoorsman was expensive! What makes the gitzo superior?

It's says Gitzo on it...

But seriously, that plays a part, but they are well made and like anything that costs money. They are designed very well, made of carbon, very stable for their weight and have earned a following by professional photogs.

I personally think feisol are the best bang for your buck tripod while being in the upper level of tripods.

My advice, find a very large top end camera store in your area and go look at tripods tell one trips your trigger. Take a head and your spotter with you and tell the clerks I need a tripod that supports and steadies it.

I've had the Slik 634, Outdoorsmans and the Promaster that S&S sells. I like the Promaster WAY better then either of them. Frankly, I think they Outdoorsman tripod is overrated. Yes it is strong and well built, but I have yet to see any benefit it offers over my Promaster.

I just returned from my first nine days with my Outdoorsaman and I was very impressed. It was stable while extended with SLC 15's. I'm 6'5" and like to glass standing up. I went with the Outdoorsman because it is the only tripod I felt was tall enough for me.

I had one and didn't like the weight and the clink of the metal. I went back to a carbon fiber. I have the pro master and really like it.

I went with Gitzo because I hate buying something and wishing I had something else. Whether I'm sitting or standing it is incredibly sturdy.
