One of those Ruger guide guns in 416 got offered to me for an insanely good price locally but I've never even considered getting one before about 1 hour ago. I realize its overkill for most everything here in AK although it seems like with the stainless finish and laminate stock it could make for a pretty cool bear specific rifle for my float hunts. I am set up to reload so I'd just need components and dies to get the 416 going.

The guy said he'd throw in 4 boxes of ammo he has I'd imagine that even reloading, those 80 pieces of brass would last forever, I cant imagine a real high volume of shooting with a 416.

Anyways, does anybody here have a 416? I need another rifle like I need another asshole but this is a pretty epic deal, I have a few 375HHs so no "need" for a big bore but this isn't about need, Like I said, I could justify it as a bear specific gun.

Who here has one?

I do, not sure why but same thing , too good a deal to pass. Mine is the older Alaskan stainless with a houge that I replaced with a mcmillian. killed. Few hogs witn it and a moose years ago. I have kept it all these years hoping to shoot a big bear up your way with it one day.

I use reloader 15 in it with 300 and 350 barnes.

Still think I like my 375 ruger better overall it's just more versatile as you know but that 416 is a serious thumper.

I think the guy selling it shot it a few times and realized it wasn’t what he wanted. How did it do for your moose?

Took a few steps and down. 350 barnes perfect performance even know I was a bit forward of where I wanted. But It was like 55yards .

I have shot some reduced loads with trail boss out of it for fun once.

I own an older Alaskan in a 416 and I absolutely love it. Its accurate and a real pleasure to carry. Delivered the knock out punch on a couple big brown bears with it. I load 400 grain Swift A-Frames ahead of 80 grains of MR-2000.image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpeg

I really like the 416 Ruger. I have the Alaskan model also. Definitely a favorite moose rifle. I having been using the 350 grain TSX. This year I loaded the 350 TTSX. Unfortunately no moose cooperated for an impact test.
The 375 Ruger in the Alaskan is another favorite. Always a decision to which one to carry for the season. I had been using the 270 grain TSX. I am currently playing around with the LRX 270 grain.

Another vote for buying the rifle. If it's that good of a deal and you decide you don't want it you could pass it on to me.

I have no idea what I would do with it, but always wanted a big rifle. 😁

I started this thread almost 2 years ago. I ended up not getting the gun. I was about to buy it and the guy told me that he had just sold the ammo and does but still had the rifle. Didn’t seem like such a sweet deal when I wouldn’t even be able to shoot it.

I hand-load for mine. But, I usually see Hornady 416 Ruger ammunition on the shelves when I see any 375 and above. There has definitely been periods when there was none of either.
The larger medium bores, big bores, and even the 338 Winchester can be hard to find at times. Ironically this year, the 338 Winchester ammunition was rare. I saw more than one classified ad in search of it.

The 416's are pretty versatile with today's bullets. The 416 Ruger is relatively easy to shoot with full house 350 grain loads. The same can be said for the 416 Remington. Though it uses a bit more powder and has a bit more velocity potential.
They are definitely easy 200 / 250 yard cartridges.

Great cartridge. Only caveat is if it is an early wood stock rifle. They need to bedded and have a crossbolt added, or it WILL crack the stock. Best thing to do is put it in a readily available laminate or synthetic.

I've built a couple of .416 Rugers. One was for a guide. 5lbs all in with scope. That was a lot of machine work and a majorly modified MPI stock. Still not bad to shoot with no brake.

The one that I have in an H-S Precision stock is right at 8#. Basically what it weighed in the Hogue. The one in the McMillan, I don't recall the bare weight. It is 9lbs 9.9 ounces with Alaska Arms rings and a Leica Magnus 1-6.3x24mm. The scope weighs 20.2 ounces with lens covers. So no lightweight rig. Still comfortable to carry for my hunting. One of my favorite rifles.
