Doctor Chat GPT

Our hospital EMR rolled out AI to assist with replying to patient Mychart messages. The automated replies are nowhere near accurate, nor do they actually answer what the patient is asking.

"Hey Dr. XXX, I've been on methotrexate for a while and my psoriasis is still flaring. What would you suggest at this point?"

AI reply - "Methotrexate is a dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor....."

I don't use it.

I have a relative that is a highly trained retina surgeon who has fellows he trains to do surgery. His instruments are the thickness of hairs being controlled by both his hands and both feet simultaneously. A challenge with the fellows is teaching them the subtle visual clues about instrument depth when your operating microscope is 2D but you need 3D information. Too deep and your destroy rather than repair, too shallow and your repair is ineffective. Translate that to a robot controlled by AI, the development challenges are significant but perhaps will get there. More likely is a drug treatment that will replace surgery.
