Do you vest? Insulated or non insulated?

I had always just layered up, sleeves included. The last two years I switched to using vests and will never go back.

I’m considering a down vest for extra insulation, and double duty as a pillow. Waiting for something to go on sale to try the concept

A vest is sure compact compared to an entire jacket for early season use and great for layering during winter. If you are an archery hunter it's nice not having baggy arms for shooting! One thing I've noticed is that most of the current vest models are made of noisy fabric that would be impossible to be quiet in brush. I remain old school and prefer fleece. My current vest is Sitka Fanatic that actually has a little more insulation than other vests. It also has a nice hand warmer pocket and giant pouch for quick access to calls and other gear. It sure is nice having an additional thermal layer for cutting wind and cold that is relatively compact.

I struggle to find a place in my system for vests except for day hunts. I use the Kuiu guide vest over a layer or two of merino for mild temps. I have the kuiu super down vest but have never figured out a way to use it haha. Wish I would have bought the Kenai vest instead, probably better for hunting/hiking since it breathes better and is more durable. Curious how others use their down vests.

I run cold so a puffy vest is perfect for me. I use the FL uncompahgre vest although if I could do it over I would use the Sitka kelvin lite. It’s perfect for when it’s too cold to hike in just a merino baselayer and fleece midlayer. The vest gives me more warmth in that situation. And when I sit or stop it adds extra warmth under a puffy jacket. Again, I’m a wuss when it comes to cold.

I hunted about 20 years without a vest (except for a blaze orange one during rifle season). Started wearing a light fleece vest in my layering system about 10 years ago.
Now I don’t go hunting without it, after mid October.
I just picked up an Eddie Bauer puffy vest at the outlet store for half price.
Looking forward to trying it out in late season.
