Do they really climb 1500' or 2000'

Sometimes that elevation change can have profound impact.

One area that I hunt is at about 9000’ It’s not that high, but I’m a flatlander. I’ve never had problems sleeping, headaches or nausea, but I don’t have an appetite. I eat because I know that I need the fuel.

On, maybe day six of a hunt, we shed about 1500’ of altitude instead of our usual “hunting up”

I sat next to a stream in the bottom of that canyon and ate a granola bar and some sunflower and pumpkin seeds that were like a religious experience.

It still cracks me up. Best dang granola bar I’ve eaten in my life.

I keep hearing a bunch of elk hunting you tubers talk about climbing 1500 to 2000' on day hunts to get to elk or away from people. How many of you are getting a net gain of a 1500' on your day hunts?

Our primary camp is setup around 8,700’ for archery, we will commonly hunt up to 10,500’. A few of the guys are gluttons for punishment and have gone on 10+ mile round trip jaunts that take them over 11,000’. We had our best success between 9,500’ and 10,500’.

My camp is at 10,300 feet and the top of the ridge is at 12,000 feet. The ridge from elk camp is 1 mile as the core flies. I have seen elk come over the top of the mountain from the North side and feed on the south side. So I can see 1,500-2,000 feet in elevation it just depends on where they hunt.

2K feet makes you a badass? My 6 yr old climbed 2k yesterday up to 12k’. I don’t even think he has a Rokslide account. Ide get him on her to brag it up to you but I think he is busy playing with his Legos.

Haha. Was just about to post something like this - my 6 and 8 year olds climbed 3,700 vertical, in a little over 5 miles, before noon a couple weeks ago. Granted, it was Mt Washington, in NH, so we topped out at just under 6,300 feet, but we're just east coasters who live at 15 feet above sea level.

Our kids should get together and start a YouTube channel.

2,354 feet yesterday in western Wyoming over 16 miles. Too dang hot right now for elk, and for me. I'll go back out once it cools down.

Like another member mentioned, I've hit that in a day more than once chasing turkey in the eastern U.S..... But then again, I'm stubborn and will do anything to get to a gobbler...

Usually 1500-3000 gain in my areas sometimes I backpack in and stay sometimes I do it in the dark. Most elk I’ve killed have been closer to 3k from the TH bit I’ve had one only a few hundred feet . I could gain more but I’m looking for the easy elk honestly

I would say it is realistic, and another good reason to try to stay in shape over the course of the summer. Easier said than done however in my case, but I am trying to burn some calories now pretty hard in order to be ready in the Fall.

I fully believe it. Here in North Idaho it's not hard at all to gain 1500 or 2000 in a day. I've had days of 14 miles and 4000 thousand feet. This of course is not usual but defiantly can happen!
Same where I hunt yearly in Idaho its steep country and your first thing in the dark AM is gaining a ton of elevation weather to glass or be above the elk you have already spotted. 1500 isn't a whole lot. We cover that much sometimes in a few hours.

Happens all the time. Alot really depends on the terrain. When I get lucky and draw the Gila, my hunting could be anywhere between 7 and 8k'. Sometimes staying within a couple hundred feet all day and sometimes going from 7 to over 8 in an hour or 3.

In Colorado this year I camped at 9k and hunted up over 10 everyday. There was no hunting lower and hunted up as high as 11.4. Big difference in elevation compared to the Gila. Took a couple days to get acclimated up there

I had to make sure I wasn’t full of crap, so I pulled elevations from where I parked and shot my elk this year. I have gone in much farther than that, and have fortunately been unsuccessful.

This is a cool old thread that got brought back to life… Not specific to elk but when hunting big mile deer bucks where I used to hunt, we usually setup camp around 7,500 feet and depending on weather, either move up or down in elevation.

We would go down as low as 5,500 and back up, as high as 9,000 and back down. This would easily be done in a day of hunting.

This 350” bull that was living up here is still alive. He made it through hunting season and was still in the same spot as of Mid November. Everyone overlooked him or those who may have saw him didn’t want to hike up this hill.

This weekend my 9 y/o boy and I did 800 ft of gain in one day of hunting flat ass western Kansas; that was in about 8.5 miles travelled.

In the Missouri Breaks this year looks like I averaged about 1300ft of gain each day.

Last year in Colorado average was around 2800 ft of gain...and I thought I was hunting the gentler parts of the unit.

This was all day hunting.
