Do I need a 20 MOA rail? Tikka .223, Maven rs1.2, Eldm 73 grain factory ammo

I bought a stock Tikka .223 with UM rings, Maven rs1.2 FFP mil, shooting Eldm 73 grain factory ammo. I zeroed the rifle and it shoots incredibly well. I didn’t realize how far I brought the scope up to zero and as I was looking to shoot at longer distances I realized I don’t have enough travel to shoot beyond 300 yards. Is there something wrong with this? UM set up the scope on the rifle for me.

It seems like I would at least be able to shoot out to 400 yards without a 20 moa rail. I really only need to shoot it out to 400 yards at this time.

20 MOA rail is pretty standard now days. You just change where the usable range of the elevation is.

This seems odd to me. I don't have any elevations built into the optic mount on my 223 and have no problem dialing to 400. Same ammo coming out of a 16 inch barrel and thats only 2.3 mils. I'm using a scope with a little more elevation travel, but Maven says that scope has 29 mils of travel. I find it hard to believe you need a 20 moa rail to hit inside of 500 yards.

Something's off for sure. What height rings did you get? I'd need 1mil at 300yds. Not a tikka but I didn't run out of elevation shooting my 223 out to just shy of 1000yds. Post some pictures.

Is the turret housing on your scope mashed inside the rings and pushing the objective down?

Is your rear ring up off the rail a bit?

Makes me wonder if the front ring isn't mounted properly. There's something definitely wrong.

On my .223 Tikka, I have UM low rings using the integrated rail and my Maven RS1.2 had no trouble dialing beyond 900yd.

I'm guessing it's a matter of where the turret is in the travel range and where the zero stop is set.

Does the reveal under you turret look like the picture posted above by Nine Banger?

If it is a used rifle, also check for a bent barrel from when cousin Skinny Pete wrecked his 4 wheeler down at that Tillman boy’s place. It never did shoot right after that. If the rings came with it they could be mis matched from different pairs and one is actually a little taller than the other. Junk under one ring, or a manufacturing defect in anything from the rifle, mount or scope. If you center the crosshairs in the scope and carefully spin it, it should remain centered or nearly so. A bent scope tube or internal problem will show up as not centered.

OP take the elevation turret cap top section off by twisting counter clockwise and holding the base of the turret. They can be tight on these scopes edoisllt once dust/sand gets in there. This gives you access to 3 Allen screws to loosen and then adjust zero stop.

Thanks for the responses everyone. It didn’t seem possible that I couldn’t dial out to at least 400 yards and you guys confirmed my suspicions. Long story short but we put a can on and it had changed the poi. I think when we adjusted the zero stop along with re zeroing it was done incorrectly.

After your responses I went out and re-zeroed the rifle and I have plenty of travel on the scope. I was pretty sure it wasn’t an issue with the rings or scope because UM set it up. I had never seen anything like that but I’ve only been shooting for about 10 years and didn’t know if what I was experiencing was possible or not.

Happy to hear you got it figure out. Glad it was a simple fix and not a broke scope.
