Do I have a Headspace Problem?

Guys I appreciate the input. I just got done cleaning it out with the Bore Tech. I patched it, then scrubbed it with a 6.5 nylon brush. Then dry patched it clean and finished with a light coat of oil. Unfortunately when I tried my dummy round which is shorter than the factory loads there was no change so its time to try something else. I will get some of the JB Bore Paste.
Could the time off from shooting it have let that carbon ring get bad? This is a first for me. Thanks again guys.

Thanks again guys. I feel a lot better about this now. Earlier today I was looking for a box to pack up the rifle and send it back for inspection. The things I've read match exactly what's going on with my rifle. I'm going to pick up some bore paste and give that a run. CAHunter, you suggest using an undersized brush like a 6mm wrapped in a patch with some bore paste on there? Short stroke the brush in the first six inches until the patches start coming out clean? KD32 and CAHunter - did you let the JB bore paste sit on there for long before working at it?

Yes use a 6mm wrapped with a patch. A 6.5mm with a patch will be to tight. Put some oil on the patch and then the JB paste/Iosso and smear it into the patch. Use a bore guide and short stroke the barrel about 50-100 strokes. Run a few patches with solvent and then a dry to clean it. Repeat the process at least 3–4 times. Then do a regular cleaning of the barrel and check it with your loaded colored round.

Cahunter is on it. I used a slightly undersized brush w/ patch as well. You don’t have to let it sit/soak. It is the mechanical action, combined with the compound, that will remove the carbon.

Out of curiosity, how would one modify their normal cleaning routine in a preventative mindset for this issue? I've not experienced it before and I tend to be in the camp of minimal cleaning until accuracy is impacted. Might want to modify my methods.

Some cartridges/powder combination are more prone to carbon rings. Dirty powders are also more prone to it. Overbore cartridges running slow powders are the most notorious. My 28 Nosler needs to be cleaned about every 30-40 rounds to keep it from building up.
One thing that also helps is to measure the actual trim length of your chamber and trim .005-.010 short of that instead of just book trim length.

I have a 300wm that seems to have a super fast barrel I never even thought about the ring because I only have 300 rounds on it but sure enough I got a good light in there and I could see it. I worked it for close to 2 hours last night and got most of it but it’s still not clear. I was using a 30 nylon bore brush and isso but it didn’t seem big enough to to put a lot of friction on it so I wrapped in a patch and continued, I’m going to a shop to get a 35 nylon bore brush today hope to break the last of it out, what a pain in the ass though

I went ahead and ordered the JB bore paste and Kroil combo along with those cleaning pellets and a VFG adapter for my cleaning rod. I also have a 6mm brush to try the undersized brush and patch trick as discussed earlier in the thread. Once I get them and have had a chance to give it a go I'll jump back on here and let anyone else know how it went. Hopefully it will help some more people. I got the items off Brownels in case anyone is wondering and the adapter for my Dewey cleaning rod I got direct off their website because of the difference in thread pitch.

Also went ahead and ordered some Bore Tech C4 and a 3 pack of their bronze brushes for 6mm 6.5 and 7mm. I'll be changing my cleaning routine to prevent this from happening again.

Any update on this Desert Dan? I am having a similar problem and having a hard time extracting factory loads. Sharpied bullet and all the marks are on one side of the bullet just above the casing. I was glad to find this thread, but wondering if you ever worked it out?

When you patch the barrel does it feel tight through the throat and then loosen up? If so I’m betting carbon ring. Borescopes like the Tessalong aren’t too expensive and will definitely tell you. Might see if a guy at your range or smith local to you has one you an borrow to check your throat.

If not I’m betting short throat which is easily remedied by a gunsmith for not much money, just stay within your mag box max.

Did you pull your ejector before checking as they will cant the bullet into the throat area. Throat tight when you clean it? If so it’s probably a carbon ring. Otherwise get the throat remed a tad longer

Thanks for the update. Spent last night cleaning with JB. After the 3rd time and then clean oiled patches, problem is gone. Must have been a carbon ring. Thanks for all the knowledge here.
