Jimmy Tarps uses a square design that seems to maximize interior space especially with a smaller foot print. I guess the main complaint is that it is less wind resistant than a round design.

I didn't make my own tipi but I did get a pole for my SO Cimarron from bearpaw wilderness design. He worked with me to make a custom sized pole.

For you guys sewing your own tents what type of sewing macyand thread do you use?

I'm sure you don't need a big commercial machine for nylon tent materials.
