I am working on making a DIY tarp out of ripstop by the rolls kit. I am curious if I actually need the D-Rings or just Grosgrain loops, as I am planning to use it as a sun/wind/rain block while hunting so I would need to be able to pitch it tight to the ground. Would staking directly through the grosgrain be a bad idea? This would only be for battening down the hatches. The rest of the time, I would use guy line to run stakes through.

I used gutted paracord for my loops. No problems. Its a bit more durable than grosgrain.

That might be the move. I have a good amount of paracord I need to get through as I have started to use more specialized cordage for everything.

I think gutted paracord is a good idea. The last tarp I made, I sewed it such that the tie outs can be replaced in the future. I used some reflective, thin diameter dyneema rope for mine.

I have also made them where I stake directly through the grosgrain and it works fine. It would just be difficult to repair them if I ever tore one.

I like that this moves the point of failure away from the actual tarp itself while still allowing to pitch tight to the ground. Think I will go with this. Thank you!

Is that just an overhand knot to create the loop?

I like that. I never liked sewing the pcord straight to the tarp. Just doesn't look as tidy.
