Curious if anyone has made their own game bags. Any idea what the material is and/or where to buy some material like the Tags bags? Seems like a simple design if one could find the fabric.

I just used mine this week and it sure reminds me of voile fabric that I use for brewing beer. Maybe a slightly higher thread count. They sell voile at Lowes as sheer curtains. Super cheap.

I own a set of tags and have made my own bags out of a different material. We have a fabric store called joann fabrics where I buy 100% white poly fabric which seams to work fine and is pretty strong. You can sort of test the breathability of the fabric by seeing how freely you can blow air through the fabric, On the fabric I bought breathability increased after a few washes I think.

I typically use pillow cases for boned out meat. They breath well and are cheap. A lot of times we get them from the Youth Ranch for .25 each and chuck them after one use. If your talking full quarters I've sewn bed sheets into bigger bags. You can buy fabric to do it as well.

The issue seems to be an issue of breathability vs insect resistance. The poly mentioned above sounds great. The voile I mentioned is poly based as well.

DIY Meat Bags

Here's some I made a few years back.

DIY Ultra Lightweight Game Bags, meat sacks.

Here's another project I completed along side the Gore-Tex Cowboy Bedroll Cover. I'd been looking at the Tag Bags, Caribou bags and Gote Bags for some while. Was even considering that Game Bag Kit by Ajillis Products on Ebay. Wanted some ultra light bags I could carry w/ me all the time simply to use to keep bugs & bees off my meat while I went for the mules, which could be a day or two. It's my intention to then drop the meat into heavier duty canvas qtr bags once the mules are on site. But.... I could never find anyone local that sold them so I could compare before buying. I knew what I wanted, but couldn't put answers to which to buy. Anyway I was in the Mill End Store looking at material for another project when I ran across a couple chunks of some ultra lightweight VERY SHEER ripstop nylon fabric. This stuff was so sheer that if you hold it up to the light, you can see right thru it! Air even moves through it w/ ease. It seemed perfect for making a set of meat sacks so I bought both chunks... hell of a deal, ~$10 for both. Just enough to make a set of meat sacks. One piece was big enough to make TWO 32" x 54" Large Qtr Bags (< 2oz each), and the other scrap was big enough to make ONE large whole deer bag (~3oz). Kinda debating on cutting that one in half to make two smaller deer sized qtr bags. When I say Qtr Bags, I mean large enough for half an animal. The main goal was to make some ultra light bags that I could carry in my pack with me ALL the time. They'd become a normal part of my gear. And at ~5oz combined, I think I can handle that.

Here's the finished product: Note: the "Whole Deer" bag on the left is still wrong side out so you can see how I sewed it. One the right are the two Large Elk Qtr bags stacked on one another w/ .338Ultra shell for perspective. Surged edge w/ heavy duty stitch for strength. With 550 cord for drawstring.

As you can see the "small" Elk Qtr Bags are large enough to darned near big enough to sleep in. he, he.

How do they compare? ... they dont.
These are made from a very much thinner nylon ripstop that is so thin & airy it's almost see through. As as such its not as durable a material. Basically these are for bug protection while I go get the mules and more durable bags.

So as you can see, they can't compare. Compromises were made in favor of compactness.

Why did I get the material?
I found a couple remnant bolts at the local Mill End store. If I were to take a guess on what weight material... I'd have to say 0.5oz or less. It wasn't marked.

I made some game bags from synthetic material I bought from Wal-Mart. I selected my material by placing my mouth on the different rolls and blew through it. I selected the one I could blow through the easiest. I made these a few years ago and have used them side by side with commercially made bags and they have preformed equally as well. Not hard to make at all. just used strong thread and doubled all seems.

This year I used mine along with my buddies Kuiu bags.

I read on another forum that tag bags are made from the material that goes under medical casts. Can anyone verify this and know what it's called?

I've made several over the years, this set has lasted me three years and packed out 4 deer/antelope. I was able to fit a front and rear mule deer quarter in each of the medium sized bags, and then i packed the backstraps and next meat in the long, narrow bag. I'll be packing all five of them on my backcountry cow elk tag next weekend. at 30" tall, they're not ideally sized for elk quarters, but I don't mind if the lower shank of the leg sticks out a bit. The bottom of each bag is gusseted to give the bag some shape, and make it easier to strap in to my Exo load shelf.
The fabric was from ripstopbytheroll.com... I don't see it in their current lineup but I bet they have a similar fabric available still. It's a 1.1oz uncoated ripstop nylon. It's really quick to dry, very breathable, and yet still pretty tough(you can hang the bags by the drawcord with no issue, everything double stitched). Total weight for all 5 bags is 9.5oz.

This year I used the Allen synthetic bags in the orange bag, they were $25 at Amazon. Lightweight, breathable, bug proof, and worked great. Filled four of them plus my Kifaru 1oz meat bag. Way better than making my own. Plus they're bigger than the Bomb bags with a larger opening. Being solo I had no issues at all getting the meat into them like I did the smaller Bomb bags.

Yeah I got some of those 'orange bag' Allen bags as well. Pretty good value too. I got them just compare materials between different brands.
Not as compact or light as Larry's Tag Bags, but pretty decent. I keep a set under the back seat of my Dodge.... for just in case. ;)

I like sewing (obviously) but some stuff its not worth bothering with seeking the materials and such in my mind unless something special is needed. In my case I wanted a couple more medium sized bags and a week back I noticed cabelas has the caribou gear 26x36 "fish bags" for $9 (still are), I just grabbed a few of those. Most material unless you fall into a deal is going to cost a few bucks/yd so realistically there likely is about $4 or so into a bag of that size for the fabric, draw cord, cordloc. Not worth searching out the fabric in my mind unless I needed a lot of them to make the cost savings something substantial.

All that said, nice looking work in this thread. :)

Sorry to revive a old thread but I found it on a google search. I’m starting a batch of my own bags and I found factory seconds fabric for $2 a yard on eBay. It’s 1.35 oz uncoated nylon ripstop.

Just figured I’d let anyone who’s considering the same project know.

If you want to go the cheap route, just get some BIG MAMA sized panty hose. My hunting buddy has been doing this for years without a failure. Those mamas put some pressure on them, so they are durable. Just dont go with a used set.
