DIY stands for steel targets?

What if you looped the chain around your crossbar and then welded the tail to it?

Looks awesome, come weld a couple up for me next time you’re in Nebraska
That wouldn’t allow me to take the plate off the stand?

You’re supposed to bolt the chain to the plate. It has a bolt hole in each corner actually. I just didn’t feel like getting bolts initially, and now 5 years later I still just weld the link to the plate lol

I’m just not smart ha I reread the your initial post and yeah. I’m dumb

3/4” gas pipe with fittings. Can’t remember exactly what it cost but it definitely wasn’t the cheapest option. Think the pipe was around $125 and maybe another $25 for fittings. But I wanted something that I could adjust the angle for uneven terrain and disassemble for travel. I’ve been happy with it so far.

For full size steel targets I use AR550 posts or fence posts. For hangers, I bend rebar and hang them by chains. The rebar is easy to bend and stores flat and compact

I feel like my dumba$$ would miss the target low and center punch that t post first shot
I have some T posts that are decades old and pretty shot up with chunks missing. I haven't had to replace one yet- but FWIW, I'm using the plates for pistol shooting not rifle.

EDIT; these are what I use with an S hook, it's best to lean the stake towards the shooter so it swings free- about 10-15deg. And yeah my posts are shot up, I regularly bring new shooters out with me to get them acquainted with pistols and gun safety.

Does anyone have any favorite ways to rig steel targets DIY? I've hung them from cord, fence posts and garden hooks but am wanting something a little more burly
My endorsement is specific to hanging steel rifle targets (pistol drills too if you're into it) + be portable enough to transport in the back of a pickup truck/under a bed cover.

For the stand assembly, notice the relationship of wood to AR500 steel parts. One stand is 2 small brace ends and sliding hangers along the 2x4. I use 2x3 dimension lumber for legs and a 2x4 section for hanging.

Advantages:
  • very light
  • sturdy/strong, bombproof stability
  • won't scratch up your vehicle paint
  • metal will last longer than me, wood scrap sections easy to replace/cheap
  • stacks up flat against wall when stored
  • can own 5 sets for less than $100
  • can use it anywhere
  • no tools needed

For the simplest and cheapest DIY option ive used some 2x4 sawhorse clamps to hang targets from. Its burly but the shrapnel embeds heavily in the wood so be sure to bring leather work gloves when moving them.

For a little bit more Midway sells their EMT brackets for $25 you have to DIY the 1in EMT but also burly.

Steel square tube (that slides over a t-post) is quick and easy. drill a hole thru the top and use a carriage bolt to mount the target. put a valve spring behind the target if you want it to ring a lil better. done.

Working in pipe trades, unistrut is easily available.

Built a sawhorse looking thing out of unistrut. Its collapsible, goes together with 2 bolts.

Currently, I need to replace the top bar.

I use 1" thick conveyor belt. Holds up much better than chain. Usually get it free from the local manufacturer. Scraps.

This kit works really well for me. Very portable too
