I have 300 lbs of sand left over from winter driving and wanted to make some sand bags for working out. Curious if anyone has any DIY plans?

I used to have an old military duffle and used freezer bags full of sand to load it. It worked well but I have a brute force sandbag now, seems worth the relatively small investment.

I took a pant leg without holes off of a dead pair of jeans, turn inside out and double ziptie* at one end, turn right side out fill/pack tightly with sand then double ziptie. Wrap tightly in duct tape to reduce dust and prolong life.

Make sure sand is dry or rumor has it a mold issue develops under the duct tape and causes horrible smells in a few months and wife complains greatly..... (Just a rumor - disregard at your own risk.)

*double ziptie = ziptie leaving a 6" tail then twist and double that over and ziptie again. Use good black zipties - not harbor freight ones that crack and break. Can also use safety wire pliers and twisting wire if you have that in your arsenal - works even better.

Kids jeans legs packed loosely make great sandbags for the range also.

I made a cheap weight training bag by wrapping a 50 lb bag of Quikrete sand (in its original plastic bag) with multiple layers of duct tape. It's obviously not as durable or versatile as a Brute Force-type bag, but it meets most of my needs.

Actually I’m thinking about using the sand for both. I have more than enough sand and I won’t need it anymore.

The PVC sounds like a really good idea for weighted pack training.

Thanks for the ideas. Do you think that rope handles would stay on with just gorilla tape if I used like an old tire or contractor bags to hold the sand?

I would tie the rope handles around the bag, if possible. Not sure the tape would hold if you’re swinging it around.

Personally, I just use a duct taped sand bag. Works well!
