DIY Rokstok Lite-ish (The Barnstok)

A Bulk of the action inletting is now done, I relieved the barrel channel enough with the router and chisels to let the action set in. hopefully I didnt take too much so I can profile it still. Also removed the mag area.

its a little rough and I removed a little too much wood in the tange area, but the idea is bedding will fill the gaps it just wont be as aeathetically pleasing.

Looking at the Tikka Rokstock lite's the action appears to set higher in the stock but I thought the Howa style ejection port looks better flush or bellow topline of the stock.

I’d love to try a two piece stock some day, iv never even had one apart before so it’s going to be a big learn when I do lol. Iv heard, they’r easier then a one piece rifle stock.

Good work so far!! I nearly tried a router for the inletting bulk on my current project just because of the time crunch, but I chickened out last minute and went back to the chisels and gouges lol. One day I’ll have a mill to help with the inletting.

My current project, started it in November, iv about 150-160 hours into it so far.
Thanks! Thats funny because I am more comfortable with the router. I did bust out a chissel and rasp a few times so far, made me feel artsy curling shavings off the chisel 😆. Router is really nice for just removing wood, a mill would be ideal.
Thays a fine looking piece really like the added lines and shape near the floor plate really cool! I definetly need to be in a place where I have more time and patience before attempting anything remotely close to that.

I almost went and bought a cheap drill press but decided to send it! I'll be getting one before I do this again, it would also help with inletting. If this isnt straight enough I can fix it when I instal the pillars I think.

If you do end up making another stock, it’d be worth looking at a clamping style self centering dowel jig. Double check the max width of the jig first. But It’ll eliminate centering with a laser and using a square to reference for drilling.

Another option is a combo square set to center of the board, mark center and then mark the exact locations of the action screws. Then Use a separate dowel jig to keep your bit square/straight.

Pair either of these methods with a brad point drill bit to start on your exact drilling mark and good to go. Cheaper, smaller and just as exact if not more than a drill press.

There is something very soothing about a sharp chisel and curly shavings!! Next to finishing, sharpening was (is!!) probably one of the hardest things Iv had to learn. There’s knife sharp, then there’s chisel sharp lol. When a tool is razor sharp, it’s pretty amazing how it can be controlled, dull tools is where the majority of my mistakes come from lol!

The transition lines around the mag box and in the grip really make a custom stock stand out, Iv found a scraper (scrapers and a sharp 5” knife) work great for keeping the transition lines sharp and getting them to flow smooth. I use a set of these to find my flow lines and mark them in symmetrically. Handy things to have on the bench.

I had my first real big screw up. I should know better than to work on these type of projects late at night when I am mentally just not with it. Was taking off some extra material with my table saw and even though I told myself multiple times to be careful I still went too far not accounting for radius of blade and cut into the grip area... less than ideal.

fortunstly alot of this material will be removed and if I have to I will fill with epoxy or filler.

good thing I am not going for pretty.

Funny, I just started mine. Duplicated the whole stock to find out that the router bit was deeper than the follower… I now have a stock that is the barely wider than the action 🫣.hopefully I can make it will work for the 17cal

Have had limited time to work on this project this last week but getting there one step at a time.

Borrowed my mother in laws band saw to finish cutting profile of the stock.
Should have just done that to start.

Working on bottom inlet. Couldnt use the router next to grip so I had to break out the hand tools.

Starting to look like a stock at least. I ordered pillars so waiting on those before I finish inletting.

Clean it to a straight cut with the band saw, Rip a slice of wood and epoxy it in. Won’t be any worry doing it that way

Oh dang, I guess its all the cost of learning but it can be frustrating. Hopefully it works on your 17. If not and you have kids could make a real cool toy gun, ha just trying to be positive!

Good tip, I saved some of the scrap just incase for such things. I doubt un trained eye would notice that. Thanks!

No problem. The good thing with wood is it can always be fixed. And you can use basically any type of wood if you need to. Same type will blend in better of course.

Looking forward to seeing more progress. Hoping to get into mine relatively soon

Haha I was thinking the same thing! Luckily it was only $60 worth of wood
