This came up in another thread and I have a bunch of unused Reflectix so I decided to make an offer to make some up for people that wanted one. I will have to probably get a little more foil tape and I don't know what it will take to mail these so I am open to donations but I don't mind the idea of paying it forward either.

With that, here is the one I whipped up this evening. I am sure everyone has seen the simple pouch that is essentially an envelope. I can make those also but I wanted to try this. So, I came up with a simple design for a standing pouch.

So, here it is sized for a quart ziploc freezer bag. The bag sticks out a little when empty but then again, I really didn't push it all the way down.

I filled the ziploc pretty much full of water to test the fit

As you can see, it sinks down in a bit once the ziploc is full. Granted, I think this is much more water than would ever be needed for a meal.

On this one the flap was a bit too small and it wouldn't tuck in so I had to use a rubber band to hold it closed. It isn't air tight but should do the job.

Here it is all rolled up next to the full ziploc for size comparison

Overall I think it is pretty functional. It is still just a quick build so it can be refined a bit. My scale is broken so sadly I don't know what it weighs. It isn't air/water tight but I think it would still do the job. I will run a test to chart heat retention at some point. Once I get the design hammered out I can make another post with actual assembly instructions if anyone is interested.

Again, shoot me a PM if you want one as I have enough material to crank out quite a few I think.

I need to make one. I have an old neo cozy I made from some old waterfowl waders,
works great but it's rather heavy. How well do you think that stuff would sew?

Yeah, I just found out that photobucket killed my account because I am at the free limit I guess. Let me see if I can fix that.

Hopefully that works now. I like photobucket but not a fan of them monitoring bandwidth.

Hmm, don't now about sewing. The foil tape works pretty well even though it does add a little weight but I think it helps seal it up a little better than sewing would.

I don't currently have a working scale to weigh it. Perhaps I can rig up a way to compare weights.

FWIW, I was mailing a couple of these out today so I hit the post office. The "standing" pouch weighed 1.7oz and that was with a longer flap. A standard pouch pictured below weighed 1.2 oz.

Also, here is a picture of the size difference rolled up. Ideally, I would think you would want to store it flat. Perhaps even around your water bladder depending on your pack and configuration. Granted, I wasn't pressing on these rolls super tight but you can see the difference.

Well Brad I tried sewing the stuff and it worked out rather well, sewed fine.
I started with a $7 car window sheild and was able to produce 6 from it.
I patterned mine off the demensions of a MH Bag so by definition a quart freezer ziplock will fit as well. I started by cutting sections 9x29 and then folded it such to leave a 6" top flap.

I radiused the top & bottom corners and sewed around the perimeter.
I then turned it inside out so the seams were on the inside.
I ran a back/forth re-enforcement stitch on the top corners to strengthen the opening.
Trimmed the edge of the top flap and ran a stitch around that perimeter.

Done.

Folded up for storage

I'm amazed at how lite they are. Doesn't even register on my digital fish scales.
Should work great and keep meals hot long enough to fully hydrate.
Thank you for the concept.

Looks like a winner to me. That would definitely shave weight since you would not have to use foil tape to hold it together. Any tricks or issues with sewing the material?

No tricks nessessary, just a fair amount of foot pressure.
Actually, it sewed suprisingly easy.
I used a std #16 jeans needle w/ normal black nylon upholstery thread.

If I did any amount of winter camping, I could see sewing a reflective ground sheet w/ this stuff. Maybe sew it to a layer of tyvek.

Not sure how I missed this thread. I have always wanted to make one of these. Thanks for the idea guys. Have you used them yet? How do they last durability wise in your pack and stuff.

Mine has held up pretty good. The foil tape along the sides has worn a little big from it being rolled up but overall it worked pretty well.

I've got two seasons on mine w/ no signs of fatigue at all.
But my plastic sporks, well they keep getting snapped in my pack.
Time to invest in one of those long handled Ti spoons.
