A year ago making a pair of gaiters was my first major sewing project to tackle. It was a long process but they turned out well. In researching how to make some, i found the internet did not have much to offer. I wanted nice fitted gaiters not just a one size fits all tube. I came across someone making spats for civil war costume stuff who used an interesting method to create a pattern. She wrapped an old t-shirt around the lower leg, covered it in duck tape, cut it off down the front of the shin, and laid it flat. That's what i did and then i added in extra space around boots and such and for seam allowances. The pair i made last year i made a seam up thr back side to allow a custom fit to the back of calf. For this pair i skipped that step. I have bird legs anyways. Not a lot of contour going on down there. Something on my boots rubbed through the waterproof coating on the inside of the pair i wore last year. It didnt affect anything since it was over the boot but i opted to add a ripstop liner to prevent this and to give them a more finished look. I didnt document the process very well but maybe it will motivate someone to give it a go. A zipper runs up the front and a flap is made to cover it. The flap velcros down. There is elastic at the top. They are made of 500d cordura. They functioned extremely well.

I just test fitted placement and then box stitched on a piece of 1" webbing. I considered something replaceable but im unikley to wear a strap out. In the even that i do, its no problem to seam rip the busted strap off and sew another. I fully intended to make a tensioning strap at the top of these but after going over the logistics in my head, it was just way easier to do the elastic again. They only have to fit me so i custom fit the amount of tension i wanted.
