Diy carbon pole

Fletch tite was originally made for gluing feathers onto wood and aluminum arrows. I would have used a super glue before even considering Fletch Tite

Too late now ha, I bought the same larger ones as mentioned above but I'll be testing it next weekend.

I had a pretty stout Ruta Locura CF pole sheer off, where the male ferrule went into the female section, while I was outside the shelter tightening it down to the ground. I didn't realize the stress I was putting on the pole when I was tightening the shelter up and when it broke, it looked like someone had cut the male ferrule off with a knife (really clean break). I ended up sending the pole back to Ruta Locura and Josh just added another inner sleeve/insert to all the ferrules, so he basically just ended up doubling the wall thickness of the ferrules. It only added a very small amount of wt. to the overall pole (just a few grams), but strengthened the pole up considerably where the sections come together.

You guys are brave. I’m going to stick with my aluminum poles as I’ve been in some awful storms with all of my Kifarus (4, 8 man tipi, Sawtooth) and am 100% sure of what they will take. If I were going to mess with carbon I would use a dremel or drill press with an abrasive stone chucked up rather than a drill bit. I’d also do the connections with thread and epoxy just like a fishing pole connection.

Good luck, it’s nice to see outside the box thinking and sharing it with others.

I like the idea of adding another inner sleeve, I ll order the next size down and do that.

Here is my version. It's adjustable from 55" to 64". It comes in at 6.2 oz. I used 18mm x 20mm and 20mm x 22mm. They were a very tight fit. I think this was due to the finish. I did have to take the smaller ones to a wire brush in order to remove the finish so they would slide properly. I'll be giving it a try on my bachelor party backpacking trip coming up in 2 weeks. All said I was into the parts less than $50.

Those push buttons, is there a certain size you need? I'd like to add those to my 16 mm pole.

I used these. You may want to see if you can find a size smaller for the smaller diameter. I think it could be a pretty tight fit trying to get them inside the pole. They were only 5.50 for 5 of them and they shipped free.

I received my next size smaller carbon tube today. Reinforced the joints. Hopefully be able to test it next weekend. Also used the epoxy to make the ends.
4 sections of 16mmOD x 14mmID Tube and 6" sections of 14mmOD x 12mm ID tubes for the joints. And then 6" sections of 12mm x 10mm inside the joints.
Total weight 5 oz.

didn't kifaru test alot of materials including carbon and then settled for aluminium?

That's discussed in a gritty Bowman YouTube video. The reason was aluminum will bend some before complete failure, were carbon fiber fails completely.

Nonetheless, I think this would be a great project to go along with my supertarp (I prefer to keep my trekking poles with me)

They look great and the CF should be as sturdier or better than aluminum.

FYI.. for the holes they make diamond edged holes saws that will not split the material for about $10.

Yeah make sure you have plenty of clearance between your carbon pole and stove pipe.

I had my Aluminum pole really close one year and with the cherry red pipe being so close...the pole started to bend.

I bet there are guys that melted their carbon pole.....we just haven't heard about it
