Hello. I searched this on other forums and didn’t find much so I hope I’m not being overly redundant. 2 of us are looking to do a float trip in Alaska for moose. I’ve talked to transporters and shuttle services and raft companies etc. we thought they floating the Birch Creek area above Fairbanks could be a fun adventure. I don’t expect this to be prime hunting as the access isn’t all that difficult and we expect plenty of others along the river. From what I’ve researched we would float/camp/hunt/ fish for a week or so. Has anybody done this float and willing to share any information? For us quality of adventure and the experience is worth more than bringing home a critter ( but it sure wouldn’t hurt). Appreciate any help!

I doubt many people here or elsewhere would say much about specificareas. There are a finite number or places you can float without a flight and most are going to...
A. Be busy
B. Be less busy but really hard to get to or lousy hunting.
No free lunch obviously.

I actually guided in a very good area last season and didn't see a single legal bull. There were extenuating circumstances (the outfitter had an 80% success rate if I recall) but it's an example of how just being in a good area doesn't make up for knowing what you are doing and being in the right place at the right time.

Random thought. If you want to hunt go for it somewhere just understand success is far from guaranteed. If you just want an adventure a straight up float trip without hunting could be a blast. If I was in your shoes I'd be tempted to plan a cool pack raft trip. You could get into a cool area and see somevresl wilderness.

Thanks for the response. I get it, I dont expect anyone to give up areas and nor would I. I appreciate the advice and the feedback. I havent given the pack raft adventure any thought to be honest. Ill look into it. Thanks!

Birch Creek gets quite a bit if floaters being road accessible and so close to Fairbanks here. I know a guy who floats it every year. Depending on the weather/rain it can be a fast float or more of a drag. But, there are moose, caribou (40 Mile herd registration hunt) and griz around. One things for sure, you can't kill one there if your sittin at home!
