Looking for recommendations on Alaska DIY hunting resources. I’d like to plan an Alaska trip in the next 3-5 years so I figured I’d better get started planning. Any and all resources would be appreciated.

DIY hunting of what and how? Unless you move here and live for 12 months, you are limited to DIY moose, caribou, black bear, and deer.

If you want to raft float, there are two books to read for a start. Larry Bartlet's and then Mike Strahans.

There are some general AK hunting books out there. Chris Batin's has been around for a long time. Larry has a caribou book. There are some very specific moose hunting books as well.

As for other resources, the search function on this forum is probably more valuable than some of the books.

There are quite a few books out there on DIY Alaska hunting - the biggest challenge with all of them is that they have been on the market for several years or many years. The DIY Alaska hunting landscape has changed drastically over the years, and (as Ray mentions above) the non-resident Alaska hunter is limited to certain species. In addition, the regulations on those species vary widely in different game management units within the state.

In my opinion your best bet would be to peruse this forum, the Alaska Outdoors Directory, and Hunttalk's Alaska Hunting subforum. Get an idea of the types of species DIY non-resident hunters can hunt in Alaska in the current day. Decide what type of species you want to pursue, then focus on those stories on the 3 forums. Once you have a general idea of what you may want to hunt, come back here with some focused questions and you're likely to get the info you need.

Not a knock on any of the books at all - I read most of them when I started hunting in Alaska back in the early 2000's. But the non-resident AK hunting landscape is very different from those days, and there are significant changes nearly every year that affect non-res hunting access and opportunities.

The OnX Hunt app and ADFG website harvest statistic tools are both invaluable....
