CGswimmer, First let me say Thank You your service!
As a recreational offshore fisherman, it's comforting to know you guys have our backs.

I feel the main advantage to a 5-string compression bag is lighter weight.
And I think you can compress the bag tighter w/ strings
As to long vs. short compression, I don't care for trying to pack a basketball.
Too much wasted space. I'd much rather work w/ a log shape. But I hear you.
To address the length, I can always loop a couple strings around it lengthwise
to shorten it.

I modified a compression sack with 5 compression strings across and left the lengthwise compression lit with 4 webbing compression straps. prior to the mod it was like a basket ball. It compresses quite a bit more now that I can pull in the girth and then smash it down if needed. Turns it into a short log and the compression bag is only 4-5 ounces total. takes up less space in pack as well.
I'll see if i can get some pics to help the thread.

thank for the idea hunt n' fish.

I see what you saying, thanks for clarifying Hunt&Fish. I also missed that your storing your bag, pad & bivy all together. I'd imagine the 5 string method is better for your gear rather than smashing it all down into a small ball.
Hey Craig, make me one too while your at it!

If I'm not going to sew the straps on do I still need the loops or will just the string and line locks work? Trying to figure out what parts to order...

Using Hunt'nFish's methods and knots, I ordered up some LineLocs from Z-Packs and made my compression straps. It took me about 30 minutes to get everything cut and tied. Installed them on my Woobie and worked like a champ. Thanks for the tips!
