Disappointment...

Well, the CO draw has slapped me in the face with another deer point. Four of the past 5 years, the unit was a 100% draw with only one point, including last year, and was a 67% draw with one point 2 years ago. Since I was putting in with 2 point, I thought it would be a sure thing... apparently I was mistaken. Is there any hope at all in the secondary draw or re-issue tags for mule deer tags?

They'll always be some CO mule deer tags available in the secondary draw but youth get preference. Meaning most of the decent tags are drawn by youngsters. What's left is slim pickings marginal areas with access issues or low percentage of public land. But if you're flexible with hunt seasons, units, and expectations you might still be able to make a hunt out of it. Good luck.

Odds in the second draw unless you are a child are non existent, returns and leftovers are a giant crap shoot between bots, and some of the other programs that grab tags… good luck

Thanks for the info. I've heard something similar to that before. I guess it's worth a try. Maybe in the secondary draw I can get a tag that isn't in high demand, either elk or deer... I do love hunting our whitetail opener here in my home state, but would rather head out west chasing bucks or bulls.

There is hope, but you may have to shoot a sub 180 deer if you can live with that.

I could 100% live with that. I assumed I'd be finding & hunting deer less than that on the tag I was hoping to draw in the primary draw.

Don't feel bad because most bucks that people kill are nowhere close to 180" myself included.

Social media makes it seem like only big deer are being killed but that's not the case. That's only what is being shown and a lot of what is shown has fancy editing. I would venture to say, of the mule deer bucks killed each year, 50% are under 100", 30% are 100-150", 13% are 150-170", and 7% are over 170". So 7 out of 100 successful muley buck hunters kill one bigger than 170"

150-170" is a respectable buck. They look great on your living room wall.

I hope one day I might finally get a buck better than 170". Getting a tag every 3-4 years isn't doing me any favors though. I'm aging very quickly. Lol

I was joking about the 180, there's a bunch of guys heading into the woods thinking it's 180 or bust when the reality is that's a crazy high bar for most people. You had another post indicating you had an early season rifle hunt. Did you not draw that hunt?

I ended up with a 2nd season buck tag, gonna get an OTC bull and shoot anything brown with balls. If all else fails, a week in the woods beats work 110% of the time.

Are you talking CO? For me, being a non-resident, the OTC tags are no longer an option ... at least that's my understanding... if there are OTC opportunities for me as a non-res, I'd love to hear about them.
