Dillon 650 xl reloaded thoughts and opinions

I have a one of these, I've had it for close to 10 years and have never set it up. I done some work for a guy that offered me this in place of cash. I am a bow hunter and don't spend much time behind the rifle, but I do shoot my pistol a lot.

My dad taught me how to reload using a single stage reloader when I was a kid. But I have no experience with this type of progressive press.

My big question is, is this something worth holding on to and learning how to load 9mm pistol loads with, or am I better off getting rid of it. It came with a set of 40 s&w dies.

I know this is a fairly loaded question, but maybe someone on this forum can offer some advice on it.

would compare it to a sports car on steroids. its a big step up from my 550 and it is quite a machine. if you are just going to do 9mm would get a square deal from dillon. you could easily trade for one with boot. shipping it would be a pain but maybe get lucky and sell it local. contrary to what most will say you can single stage with the 550 or 650 if you decide to keep and want to do rifle .

Awesome machine and very versatile. I'd definitely hang onto it and use it. As mtswampfox said you could sell it and buy a square deal but then you're stuck with pistol only calibers. Also, Dillon's warranty is awesome.

Fatastic machine. Were it me I'd keep it and learn to use it. How much 9mm do you shoot - you'll likely find you shoot more with the capability to reload significant numbers quickly and easily with the 650.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I am probably going to keep it.

I typically go thru 1000 rounds every 1-2 months. I'm at 800 for this month, but probably won't shoot as much next month.

I have the instructional video from Dillon for the setup, are there any other videos or resources that you guys would recommend.

Warning - use of an efficient high quality reloader leads to caliber creep....

I started with 9mm and 5.56, now I do 45, 380, 40, 7mm, 3006, 300 win mag, 7.62......

Awesome machine. Get a 40 so you can use the dies. Once you get a feel on how the loader works, you will wonder what you were waiting for. I have a 550 and have their 45acp, 38/357 and 32 h&r dies. Need some 9 and 40 and one or two others. Once you get it set, just loads like clockwork. Caliber creep is a good way to describe any of the Dillon loaders. If I had a 650, I would be a really happy camper.

I agree with mtswampfox that I would sell the 650 and buy a square deal B if you are only going to do 9's. If you are thinking about doing some rifle loading, a single stage loader might be better unless you are going to get into serious volume and don't want to spend a lot of time loading.

If you have been saving brass, just track down some primers, bullets and powder. Call Dillon and find out what you need to convert to 9 and have fun.

Square Deals are nice if you're only going to use it as a dedicated machine. Otherwise the 550 or 650 is better and more cost effective to load multiple calibers with.
