Digital Magazines

Can anyone comment on the pros and cons of getting magazines digitally? I like the idea of not having back issues laying around, I think of topics sometimes and go looking in back issues for info.

As a publisher I can explain why we love em. First it opens up a whole new market, second it costs us virtually nothing, third it helps immensely with SEO, fourth it can be saved (via pdf file) so nobody will request a hard copy (back issues) in the mail, fifth you (as a reader) can enlarge the type using Acrobat Reader (which you'll appreciate later in life) plus you can use the search engine in Acrobat to find what you are looking for instantly. Lastly when you see something you wanna share, it's easy to send to someone. No photopying, no faxing, easy peasy. There is NO downside. We print and mail 32,000 magazines a month but our e-readership is increasing every quarter. The people using HTML for their online editions are clueless, same with those using programs like uberflip. The pdf format is the only way to go and allows all those URLs and email addresses to be hyperlinked making it faster to respond to ads and other people sharing their contact info.

I know I am in the minority here, but I only have a flip phone. At home, we have a desktop computer, and my wife has a laptop. No smart phone, notebook, or other of the latest electronics. I like the hard copy of the magazine. It makes it easy to take it to the Dr's office, when I'm on the can, or taking it to work to show something to someone. I have several on my desk at work, and it always is a conversation starter when we get visitors at work.
One day, I will have to move on up to the modern electronics, but for now I prefer the magazine.

I personally love an actual magazine!! Nothing wrong with digital magazines at all. I just love flipping through a newly received magazine!!

I won't even bother with the digital versions. I will not pick up a book, but I will read through an entire magazine in an hour or two.

I have mixed feelings about digital magazines, I think if the publisher sets the articles up correctly and they remain very simple then they are great to read. It's still hard to beat a hard copy especially when your traveling or want to take a break from looking at a computer screen

I don't think digital should be the sole media for any publication, a printed version will always be appreciated however, the e-mag as a second alternative truly provides benefits a printed edition cannot. It is not an either/or issue. Having access to both is best.

That's what your phone is for. Old IPads are nice for relegated bathroom use, too.

In my entire life I have NEVER understood why people actually want to sit there on a crapper taking the time to read something. My goodness......go in......drop bait.....and get out.

I get both versions of the two hunting magazines I subscribe to...it doesn't cost me any more money.
I like the digital because I can immediately link to reviewed items, ads, or google for more information. That said, I still read the paper copies on the weekends with my morning coffee.
I also like the fact that I can pass on and share the hard copies without worrying about getting them back. And I don't have to worry about storage.
I've only been doing this the last year and a half but I could see giving up print.
