I'm no rifleman, but I've been shooting them long enough and have never had this issue before, presumably because I've always been shooting short/medium action calibers.
Now I'm hunting dangerous game, which often have longer, magnum calibers and long actions. And two rifles in a row now, a Sako and a Ruger M77 Alaskan, are being very difficult to scope. I know there are work arounds, but I hate work arounds in general.
1) I'd prefer nothing protrude into the chamber space, e.g., the toe of a scope base
2) I'd prefer not to have a pic
3) scopes seem to be too short for the mounting spread on a long-action rifle -- scopes in DG configurations, i.e., 1-4, 2-7. The 1-4 Leupolds I've tried are maxed out with very little room to move fore/aft for eye relief; the 2-7 wouldn't mount at all. I know if I go to 3-9, the scope will be long enough, but I don't want a minimum of 3x for sudden encounters with brown bears.
So, where are my DG scopes, configured as above, that are long enough to span a magnum length action without having crap protrude into the action? (And is there some reason DG scopes can't just be made an inch longer?)
