Delorme inreach ex tracking ?

Can any of you that have the Delorme inreach ex help? I am trying to decide what plan to go with. I want to get the safety plan. Can you use the Inreach to leave a bread crum trail to track back to camp with out sending track points or log track points. According to delorme track points send or log will cost you 10 cents. I want to use the unit to mark camp leave a trail so I can track my way back to camp with out extra cost. Thank you for your help.

IMO, you need two units.

First off, keep in mind the Delorme uses a rechargeable battery. I'll say that again for emphasis..."rechargeable battery."

Which means goofing around with marking trails and waypoints is a great way to wind up with a dead unit once your leg is broken 6 miles from the trailhead.

The fact that you can't pop the back of and throw in a fresh set of batteries alone relegates the Delorme to an emergency use ONLY device for me.

But that aside, as a GPS unit, Garmin is miles ahead in my book. Not only can they take the map chips (Delorme can't) they are much more user friendly. Also, my Garmin units acquire GPS signals MUCH faster than the Delorme. And, the Garmin can pick up satellites while I'm sitting inside my house. I have to take the Delorme outside to do so. If you've ever tried to get a signal under a thick canopy on a north facing slope, you'll appreciate Garmin's technology.

My advice is to get the Delorme SE and then a Garmin or some sort for daily navigation.

Agreed, or use your phone for nav to save costs. Most apps are $10-$20, Gaia(pro only, not necessary) and OnX having subscription costs as well.

I've never really had any type of wait getting a gps signal on the Delorme units. Navigation with the Delorme I've found to be a lot better than trying it with the On X app, but they did make that app a lot better this last year. I only carry my phone and the Delorme Explorer, so I have a "real" GPS, but can use my phone most of the time no problem.

I don't think you can use tracking for free on the safety plan. That's what I run most of the year, but I bump it to the freedom plan for hunting season. If there is a way to do it, hopefully someone will chime in.

On X has tracking now - I've tried it twice, once it worked great, the other time it shut itself down for some reason....

x2. I have the SE only for emergency communication. For navigation, I use the OnXMaps HUNT and Gaia on my phone. Been very happy with this configuration.

in doing the math i feel i can use the safety plan and pay as i go for extras and be money ahead of upgrading when hunting season rolls around.

extra texts or way points are mighty cheap. i can have it available to grab if i decide to do something and dont have to try to get it turned on or upgraded.

i will carry a spare phone battery source and a cord that is capable of charging the in reach. [ at least partially]

You can set the "send mode" of tracking on the Delorme to OFF, and put the "Log mode" all the way down to 1 sec intervals if you want. This will allow you to back track, but wont be using the .10 tracking points on the safety plan. Also, as to the response on the rechargeable battery, I carry a goalzero battery pack with 4 double a batteries and just usb charge the inreach when I am asleep. So yes you cannot put batteries directly into the unit, but you can still carry additional batteries and recharge it. There are many other options beside goal zero too. The decision on an internal battery pack was made for weight, size, and weather proofing.

Guys,

I can't wait to see the next generation of these products. If they are successful with a Garmin upgrade of the GPS, a map feature, a more user friendly key board, longer battery life, all the while maintaining the present affordable service, then they will truly have something. The backcountry hunter could justify the new expense because the device will complete two tasks with one unit. IMHO these next generation units would fly off the shelves!

I used the delorme inreach last week and found it a nice piece of mind. I used it as a tracking tool for family members back home so they could follow my progress and where I was at.
Like others have said I will still carry my normal GPS too!

I did the freedom plan for this allows family member to 'ping/locate' you at no cost to you. You can also use tracking and log interval etc. I did run into an issue for it didn't seem to be 'tracking' me and then did send the information 'up' to the their web page.

Overall I'm happy with it and it also allowed me to TXT back home to let them know everything is ok. Also when you send a message back home or to whoever it'll 'tag' your location so they can click on it to see where you are at.

So far I like it and I'll 'suspend' my service come October or November. I'm still learning how to use the 'preset messages so it won't cost/count against me for my total messages sent.

Glad you're liking it xziang! And like you said at the end, figure out those preset messages and you'll be able to text much of what is needed without using up your "paid" sms texts. Dont forget to do the latest firmware update when you reactivate. It gives you remote weather forecasting!
