Family member brought this set up to town with him for the Christmas holiday and would like to join me on a deer hunt. I'm not at all wild about this set up. What say you? Maybe put him somewhere with only close shots? I don't know about barrel length. If I had to guess, it's going to be on the short side. I guess heart / lung shots best?

EDIT: Small bodied deer. Anything over 150 pounds is a rarity.

If it’s a bolt action with the 120 tacTX and likely 16” barrel. Get ready to gut deer if he can shoot. The 110 and 120 tacTX are amazing bullets
He said they are these below. Read some retail reviews on websites that talked about clean kills.

Wow, I’ve not seen those. Sorry can’t answer. Either way, I’ve seen deer killed with 7.62x39 125 soft points and they were very dead. Part of me wonders if this isn’t a bullet from the sierra partnership.

Maybe. Just looked to Barnes bullet selection in 120 grain jacked lead core and this ammo Didn’t come up. Selected ammunition in jacketed lead core and there it was.

Anyway. Could loan him a rifle (19 year old) but don’t want insult and would like him confident.

100 yards and under on small deer… I’m probably over thinking it.

So I can’t find any ballistic gel info about this ammo, but I will say. One of the cool things about cartridges like 30-30 and 300blackout is that bullets are generally developed specifically for the cartridge and therefore will generally work perfectly within the velocity window of their realistic hunting ranges. So 0-200yds these bullets should work perfectly unless you put them in weird platforms like a 5” pistol or a 28” single shot rifle. Given that they say varmint and medium game I would expect more violent expansion than 100% weight retention.

I've shot a few deer with the 135 gr sierra varminter out of a 300 blackout to 125 yards. They've been very dead very fast - including big corn fed midwest bucks. I think if he can shoot, they'll work just fine.

Similar to others, I’ve not shot that specific bullet. I have shot a handful of deer with 125 SST’s out of a 7” 300BO out to 140ish yards, they’re all very dead. I’d think at 100-125 he’ll have no problem so long as he does his part.
