Deer scat? Google keeps saying bear. That would be a tiny bear!

I’ve seen lots of deer and elk poop clumped like that. Very common

You can almost always get an idea what the bears have been eating looking at the poop. There is pretty much always some undigested grasses, seeds, or hairs in bear poop. Also they pretty much always leave more of a pile versus a a couple small clumps.

Hmmm, slightly acrid taste. >;-)

Many thanks. I agree to deer. Looking very closely you can see the ground parsley look that you see in deer pellets. It's just less pelletized than I've ever seen before.

Speaking of bear, I saw one in Awendaw last year. That's less than 35 miles north of here. Likely wondered down from Conway. She was on the Wambaw Cycle Trail. Got poor video, but the trail hosts got a great shot of her footprints.

No scat expert but I've seen deer poop like this very often. All the bear scat I personally seen in person never looked like that.
i have also never seen bear scat that looked anything like that... spring time, their scat is more pellets, but big teardrop shaped pellets, and you can still see the grass fibers all through it... then it gets more soft piles with a hint of loafy-ness, then you go into berry season where it's berry log fruitcakes, then you get a mixed bag of chunky apple sauce, cream of mushroom soup, and acorn patties.

that deer scat is what i see in those transition zones between main feeding and bedding, where they may bed for awhile in the morning, feed around, then work to their main bed... i think those loafy deer poos are made while they are laying down chewing their cud. around here it's in those brushy edges that are thick, but the dense brush is full of feed too, like wandering blackberry edges, most of the deer scat looks exactly like that (the above pic isn't very fresh scat)

Elk have scat like that. If tney are eating really wet grasses or feed with high water content it will clump like that, if they are eating dry grasses and bark and so on it will come out as pellets.
