Deer Hunt With My Dad

No luck tonight guys. Our evening plan almost worked out but no dice and we are done for this trip. Packing now and we'll be on the road early in the morning.

Thank you for all the encouragement and comments along the way. My dad and I had a great week chasing deer together.

Thanks for sharing been a few goods reads on here lately, I like threads like these.

Enjoy all the time you can with dad. My dad was my main deer hunting buddy since I was around 10 years old, hitting close to 70 now he moved on about 6 years ago, I still miss him when walking into the deer woods. We always talked about going west to hunt but never made it, when I did go I took his pocket knife with me and used it to gut my first antelope, I open the first day of deer season with his rifle its my way of having him with me. Some day I will be told old and beat up to stomp the high ground and even now I still sit and look at the mounts that he was along on the hunts that produced them, no matter what you think he is with you just as you will be with your son or daughter when your time comes. Old Hunters never die or quit.

Great write-up! Just got back from a Mule Deer hunt with my Dad and brother. We are from Michigan and it was our third trip out west. I was able to shoot my first mule deer. Almost got one for my dad too but couldn’t quite make it happen.

Great writeup and pictures.

I hunted with my Dad almost all my and his life. When I retired and moved to sw Colorado, Dad came here every year we didn't go to Wyoming. He killed his last elk when he was 90. He has been gone 13 years and I still miss him.View attachment 955421View attachment 955422

I'm about to head out to pick my dad up for an out of state deer hunt. The drive is about 18 hours so we'll take a couple days getting there.

It'll be an area we've never hunted before so we will be learning it as we go. I'll do my best to update this thread regularly so follow along.

In the meantime: Last weekend I was out with my best friend and his 8 year old son for deer camp in Washington. The goal was to get Luke a chance at his first buck.

Opening morning, we split up in the dark and headed to glass different areas. At daylight, I spotted seven bucks so I called my buddy and told him to head my way. It took us a couple of tries to stalk within shooting distance and get Luke set up. Eventually we were within 296 yards of the bedded bucks and Luke was able to make a great shot and kill his first buck.

The only other legal buck in the group stood still long enough after Luke's buck was down that I decided to fill the freezer with this young buck. We had a great time and made some awesome memories.
