Deciding on CO unit

Howdy y’all. I’m fairly new to backcountry hunting with only one solo archery hunt under my belt (a successful one I might add)! I’ve decided to hunt CO this year, and I’ve done a ton of research to this point on various units in CO. I have a small list I’ve put together of units that maximize my 3 points (or so I think unless creep gets me), consisting of both archery and first rifle.

Looking to submit apps tomorrow and curious what other things you guys consider when trying to decide on units? For instance, someone brought up to me that he prefers not to hunt units close to big towns due to recreational traffic, which is something I haven’t thought of. I’m afraid pre-scouting these units is not an option as it won’t leave me with enough PTO to make all the hunts I plan on going on, so I’m strictly relying on the available info out there to make my decision. Anyways, maybe there is some bit of info out there that could help me pull the trigger on one of these units.

@sndmn11 That's my take on Colorado units, too. The terrain in CO varies widely, including some of the more extreme terrain I've encountered while hunting. The terrain of the unit will define the hunt tactics in a lot of ways. I found myself in a steep unit last year wishing I could find a place to glass....never did.

I will add that proximity to big towns simply does not matter that much in CO.

The Weimenuch wilderness is over 6 hours away from Denver and is one of the busiest places you could hunt in the whole state. Whichever unit you pick, avoid the weekend if you can and go as far away from any 14er or bicentennial 13er as you possibly can.

I don't think prox to big towns really makes a difference even for recreational traffic. If you are cashing in some points you should be for the most part on your own.

Feel free to PM me with the units you are thinking or looking at and I could give you a better idea. As others noted, it pretty much comes down to terrain for what you want to hunt and can handle. Lots of units are going to have a pretty big variance between 1R and archery for a lot of different factors also.

If you've "done a ton of research" and you've got 3 points, you should be able to select a unit to hunt. There is no magic formula and if you've studied the draw recaps and harvest reports, pick one that makes sense to you and go with it. Your expectations for a first time hunter shouldn't be overly optimistic and you should view it as a learning experience as much as anything else. And if you're not going to scout the units prior to hunting them, your expectations should account for that.

What unit did you go with?
