Deciding a unit.

archery hunt..say you hunted a unit 5 years ago and was unsuccessful but saw a few elk and now that unit is a draw unit. Do you try to go back or find a new otc unit and fight more people.. I worry that the unit is now a draw because the lowered elk numbers but hope it's draw unit to improve the quality. lol fingers crossed

Were you collecting points in those 5 years? Points come in handy even though some will say they are worthless. Collect them and still hunt OTC until you can draw a decent fully limited unit.

Not collecting point it's one of those units that just change to draw this year

Collect points. Hunt in a regular OTC unit until you can draw a fully limited unit.

I wouldn't bother starting to building points for elk in CO. You're already too far behind and the trophy potential just isn't there. Build a couple points and go hunt better bulls in MT and WY and in the mean time hone your skills on CO OTC tags.

One more thing, I spoke to CPW and it sounds like they expect there to be leftover archery bull tags for the SW units that went to draw this year so that gives you ample time to decide.

All I know is that every new area I hunt its a process of elimination....so sometimes knowing where they aren't helps narrow down where they are.

put that unit in as second choice...draw and hunt it. don't draw and go otc. let the draw decide for you
