Putting a new stock on it, wondering if I would be better going with a M5 style or with a hinged plate? anyone have any input?

It’s all personal preference! I don’t have any hunting rifles with a dbm except the old Remington pumps. I don’t like the idea of losing a magazine then trying to single feed it. Always carry a spare. Not a huge deal with a savage, xbolt, American ($40-70) but a $150-200 Sako is en expensive loss

I was looking at the Unknown in the M5, I think as you guys said its always a fear that one falls out

I order stocks with the M5 inlet every time. Should you decide to use a BDL style, Hawkins has their M5 Oberndorf. DBM instead, then use their M5 Hunter which is a flush fitting bottom metal. APA makes one even better IMO. Hawkins Hunter Mags available too which keeps a lower profile. Standard AICS if you so choose.

Personal preference as stated above but having the inlet affords you those options with ease.

Given the option, I’ll always take a blind magazine, then a hinged floor and finally a detachable magazine

This ^^^^^

I bought a stock with BDL inlet in an effort to save weight. Then, I decided I wanted to use a DBM because my rifle was finicky to top feed.

Result, I had to buy new bottom metal, a new stock, and a new magazine (or two). Had I gone with the M5 inlet, I would not have needed the 2nd stock.

So with a M5 inlet stock you can use either BDL hinged or a DBM ?

One thing of which I’m not certain is Hawkins mentions the action being cut for extended Wyatt’s mag boxes if using their M5 Oberndorf. Mine are on custom actions so I need to see if that applies to a REM 700.

Maybe this is a rem platform problem (no personal experience with them) but I have linever had a magazine fall out of a gun. That concern always confuses me because in my experience it is just not a thing in my world. I’d be curious to hear if this actually happens to other people

It happens on DBMs that have a big, fat release lever protruding well below the trigger guard. I've lost a few hundred dollars worth of AICS mags due to that feature and I'll never own another one. The mag gets released by the lever contacting brush ect, the mags aren't simply falling out randomly.

Ah that makes sense. I’ve always stayed away from platforms with that big lever. Just seemed like a bad idea and easy to bump

Get a DBM with the same mag release as the BDL. Or, a smaller mag release. You won’t lose mags. I have never lost a magazine.

I also use our LS Wild Scoped Action Wrap on my rifle whenever I am not actively shooting or hunting.

Greyboe has BDL bottom metal that fits in the M5 inlet. I agree with the above, get M5 and have the flexibility.

I'll probably just go with the m5 inlet on all my future stocks. Like others have said if you really want to use a bdl hawkins does make an m5 bdl. Tuning a bdl systems to feed right can be a pain in my experience. DBMs are usually plug and play.
