As far as different types go, I have an ankle height pair for running, a crew height hiker pair and an over the calf pair (I need these with my taller hunting boots). I've been really happy with every pair and will have spares of each type later this year. I know they market some "Scent Lok" socks specific for hunting but I wouldn't pay the extra for those. As far as I've been able to tell, that gets you an extra 2-3% merino instead of nylon and that's the only difference. I haven't noticed any scent after wearing my running socks without washing for 3 weeks straight so I don't think it's worth paying more for the "Scent Lok". That's my take anyway. Decide what height you want and go from there.

That's another thing I love about wool is I can wear them in my workout or running shoes for a week or more before washing. I wear my wool socks for a week in my office shoes at work. Just laundry savings alone probably offsets the cost.

I have tried several brands of wool socks and nothing compares to Darn Tough IMO. That said, I also really like Peoplesocks. I ordered some on Amazon over 3 years ago and they are still going strong! Also made in USA and good price. At that time I paid $25 for a four pack of boot socks. Although they have gone up to $35 now I believe.

I've been wearing Fits Brand socks with no complaints, but I think I'm gonna give these a try.

i used to wear smartwool but have switched to darn toughs, the guarantee is enough for me and the smart wools just did not seem to last.
i prefer padded

Ditto - I am currently in the process of swapping my Smartwool's for Darn Toughs.

Got a pair last winter. Wore them every day for a few weeks. Got several pairs now and won't buy anything else.

Great socks. Seemingly expensive but with these, you do get what you pay for. I've been wearing them for years and have yet to wear a pair out. I'm a crazy bicycle rider and their low socks are the best biking socks that I have ever ridden in. They have a sock for just about any application you can imagine.

And they are a great Vermont company!

A more economical solution might be Simms Sport Crew sock: https://www.simmsfishing.com/shop/socks-gloves/sport-crew-sock.html

This thread motivated me to look, I bought 6 pair in October 2012 and not a hole in any of them. I pretty much wear them if I'm wearing anything other than tennis shoes with shorts. They have similar makeup to the Darn Tough (merino wool, nylon, spandex), just slightly different ratios. I've worn them from quail hunting hot west Texas to December KS deer hunts, and they are suitable for everything except maybe long glassing sessions if it's super cold. If you're moving I think they're plenty fine.

Darn tough socks are made right down the road from where I live. They are literally all I wear, work, woods and gym or running. I've got probably 20 pairs, thebestpart obviously is comfort and breathability but a close second would've that if you do manage to work a hole into one (probably more from incorrect boot/shoe size than anything else) they will give you a new pair. I have had a few pairs that saw hundreds of miles of shed hunting and I got a slight hole and no questions asked they gave me a new pair. Some bigger dealers may be able to actually do the exchange if you don't want to send them in. I have no sponsors so this is an unbiased opinion and I would say one of the best socks made and a great company to deal with.

I'm with everyone else. I love these socks.

Mine are three years old and I've worn out four pair. I just set them aside to send in one day. Even though I've worn them out they've lasted longer than other socks for me.

I'm a big fan.

Not sure if they are on there now, but Massdrop has them on their site quite frequently. They are great socks.

Try some Dr. Scholl's Gel inserts first. Lots cheaper. I didn't like the Superfeet. Glad I was able to return them to REI. Whatever you do, try them BEFORE you hit the trail on a weeklong backpack hunt. Don't ask me how I know that.

I bought 2 pairs of the Vermont Boot Cushion Hiking socks from amazon and they are superb!! They are not as thick as I though they would be, but thats okay with me. I also bought a few pairs of smart wool hiking socks and they are much thicker. I am a fan of the darn tough for life. I just picked up the 3pack on massdrop. I think im set for a while.
