Dall Sheep - cancellation question

Long story short - I had booked two slots for a guided NWT hunts for 2026 dall sheep hunt two years ago - it was intended to be my son and me. I am now nearly certain I will not be able to go on the hunt. I shared with the outfitter that I know this is my responsibility and if there are no other arrangements made I am out my deposits. I shared my preference was to move further out and not have to fall out of the queue or lose my deposits - though I appreciate a future year would be more expensive.

I am a trusting individual and the outfitter said he try to sell them as he hits the sheep shows this spring.

Does anyone have 1st hand knowledge about what they feel are the best steps to take … things I should consider.

I searched the posts and didn’t find anything that quite covered this situation - though another gentleman was second guessing the trip but ultimately went on his scheduled hunt - I plan / want to go just not as scheduled.

Boy. I would really try to go. They are not just more expensive they are MUCH more expensive.

I doubt he will have any trouble selling your hunt at an inflated rate. And get an inflated future rate from you. This far out I’d highly doubt there will be a cancellation deal for your spot. They all have long lists of guys happy to pay full price. It boggles my mind.

Who was it booked with?
Lancaster

I wish I could make it work but 90% + certain it won’t and I am not going to risk my deposits on that which lead to a discounted last minute cancellation hunt. I will eat my medicine, fall back in the queue, and pay the extra money. It’s a graduation gift for my son and it will help him work on deferred gratification.

Thank you for the input though.

The Sheep Show starts tomorrow and I’m betting there will be a lot of guys trying to find a hunt for this year and stopping by the Lancaster booth along with all the others. Heck, I might swing by first thing tomorrow just to hear what he says when I ask if he’s got a hunt available this year.

You picked a good one; Clay probably has enough old school left in him to take care of you. Hope it works out for you 👍

100%. Good chance Clay has it sold by noon today at Sheep Show. Good luck.
