Found this rock on a friend’s ranch in SW Montana. Was near the river. Perfect hole about 1” deep by 3/4” in diameter. What dafaque is it?

Oh yeah, it’s not a potato… it’s a rock.

Native American bow and stick fire starting rock. Probably the one held in the hand at the top of the stick.

That’s what I was thinking , but I also read this can happen naturally. They call them hag stones.

The bottom of the hole is cone shaped.

I'm a member of several archeology groups on Facebook. People have posted rocks just like yours, and the general conclusion is, natural. There is a specific name for the formation, but I cant remember.

Edit: They call them, hag stones.

That’s what I’m reading too. Very strange this could be a natural occurrence. The rock is otherwise undisturbed elsewhere. Looks like a potato.

“Peepee rock”… “hagstone”… I’m beginning to think @Brontosaurus might be right…

Taking it to the museum next week or the following. We’re gonna get to the bottom of this. Hopefully they don’t keep it like they did to that Boneyard Alaska guy… it belongs in the lukebrowning museum of cave man pocket *******

Saw a bunch of these along Lake Michigan this week. I suspect it’s natural—some portion of the stone, or inlay of another mineral in the stone, is softer than the rest and gets eroded at a faster pace. This happens in real time (though at a smaller scale) when you polish rocks in a polisher. It looks wild but I do think it’s natural.
