When my dad was around 12 years old, he was given this Model 70 243. This was the rifle he carried on most of his deer hunts. When I was a kid, I remember him and my uncle calling it a “tack driver”.
After my dad passed about 10 years ago, it has sat in my safe without a scope. Each year I told myself I would get it set up and take it out hunting.
This past spring I found a good deal on a new stock and bought it. After installing the stock, the gun didn’t have that sentimental feel. I sold the new stock and re-did the old stock, added a new recoil pad, then put a scope on it that I had sitting in the safe. Last week, with the cooler weather, I finally had time to take it to the range.
Well this thing is definitely a shooter. I did 3, three shot groups! With the first box of Factory hunting ammo, all three groups were around 3/4”. I then swapped to another box of factory hunting ammo. Again, did 3 groups of 3 shots. These bullets shot even better with the best group at .28 and the worst .41. Think I found what I’ll be shooting through it, now I have to try and find some more.
The trigger is around 5lbs, so a spring is ordered and hopefully can get the trigger about 2lbs.
Here’s my question. I was planning on bedding the stock. With the gun shooting as well as it does, would you mess with bedding it, or just leave it as it is? Thanks
