A beautiful first rifle 6x6 tested positive. I’m heartbroken because I’ve hunted in the Flat Tops for the last 12 years and don’t know how to feel about it going forward.

Does CWD impact where you consider hunting?

Have you had your elk tested the previous 12 years?
The idea is if you have smoked the last 12 years, there is no benefit to quitting? That being said I have had all my elk tested since I have become aware.

Ease up. I just wanted to know if that's the first positive in 12 years or just his first elk tested.

Is it bad form to ask what unit the positive test came from? Flat tops is a pretty large area

The science is unclear, I won’t feed my kids CWD positive meat, I would probably pass as well.
I mean it’s not unclear really, it hasn’t jumped to humans. Not one single case. Multiple states across the country for several years have had CWD there isn’t one single case in humans. Obviously, we can’t be 1000% sure of anything in this world. But in the realm of things that make me nervous, a CWD burger is pretty low. I definitely won’t be giving any to my dogs like I normally do some times though.

They don’t test for it, so we wouldn’t know it. The state wildlife agencies are starting to disclaim their warnings.

That said, one thing I’ve wondered about… has it transferred to humans and we just don’t know yet? What if it incubates for 30 years or something? I sure don’t know but thats something I think about. I shot an elk in a cwd area of Wyoming in 2019 and didn’t get it tested which I regret. It’s still in the back of my mind

How many humans have been tested for CWD ? We asked for my mom to be tested after her death, and my farther in law, they had no clue what we were talking about. And were told both times, they don’t do that. Both died of “ Alzheimer’s “ which they don’t test for, they just diagnose you with that. Who’s to say humans haven’t died of it, if ifs never tested for. We had a friend that we went to high school with that passed away from mad cow disease. The same thing as CWD really. Tested because of younger age.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.
I can see the CSU deer pens from my house and often hike by them.

Me and my buddies have probably eaten more CWD deer over the years before it was even tested for.
The testing always follows the grant money and is a moving target.

I ain’t sceered - I just hope Fauci doesn’t hear of it

You should donate your body to science, upon your death. Especially if you have them tested and know you ate CWD positive meat. Which I don’t know why you wouldn’t have them tested if your eating them any way, you might as well be a science project.

If I die, it ain’t gonna be from CWD.

That’s the least of my worries

OP, yes I do factor in CWD with hunting plans. I’ve changed strategies over the years due to influx of positive cases (or close proximity of game corridors) only to see it spreading into other areas. I personally have a hard time gambling in on the chances of the prion disease jumping the species barrier. Likelihood doesn’t seem good right now based on best current science but time will tell the truth. Losts of states have sporadic, or lack there of, surveillance for CWD. I personally believe CWD is more wide spread than the places already documented. CWD is definitely something we (hunters) shouldn’t take lightly. Nothing good comes from it. We’ve missed the ball on slowing the spread years ago for various reasons that one could research themselves.

There’s lots of good podcast out there that dive into CWD that might be worth a listen if you haven’t already.
