Hey guys,
I am new to the ML world. I bought a used 50cal CVA, had warranty issues before I ever fired it. They treated me awesome and sent me a new rifle, so I asked for the 45 cal. I don't know why... but I wanted the 45 cal.
I got to take it out shooting today. Sighting in was awesome, was 2" low at 25 years without touching the sight.
I started out shooting:
Powder: Triple 7 FFG
Weight: 80 grains
Bullet: Power Belt ELR 285gr
Primer: Winchester 209
Velocity: 1808FPS
This combination provided good results. I got about 1.5" groups at 75 yards, two of the rounds were touching. I am also using a non-magnified Eotech as SD does not allow magnified optics.
I switched to using Hornady Borelock 280gr bullets. These are much easier to seat, not that the Powerbelts were difficult, but I could feel a definite difference. Accuracy was piss poor, about 12" groups at 75 yards with the two shots I took, just over 1725 or so FPS. Not gonna work.
I weighed 80 grains, but on the volume viles I had, gave between 100-110. I know the book says 120 is the max charge, Youtube University said the 50's liked the 80 grains by weight. Figured I would try it.
Cleaned the rifle from the Triple 7 powder and then tried this:
Powder: BH209
Weight: 80 grains
Bullet: Power Belt ELR 285gr
Primer: CCI Large Rifle Magnum
Velocity: 2000FPS
I saw online the best thing to do is to get the Variflame conversion kit. So of course, I did. Why can't I just try shit before modifying it? My wife asks me that all the time. However, I digress.
I much prefer the velocity of this load, but the rounds were inconsistent. I would hit center, then 6" left and 1" up. Then center again, then 3" down 6" left. Not horrible, but not acceptable for me. I never got to try the Hornady bullets, ran out of time.
I say all this to ask a questions. What have you guys come up with that works with these rifles? I loved the accuracy of the Triple 7, but the velocity was shit. Or is 1800FPS a good load for a ML? Again, new to the game so not a clue. Smokeless, I have tons of experience, so this is new ground for me.
Any help would be appreciative. I do hate spending damn new $5/shot shooting paper... so trying to narrow that down before my hunt starting next month.
