Debating cutting the cable cord and going with a HD Antenna, Fire TV, and utilizing Amazon Prime and Netflix if/as needed.
Fire TV seems like a great thing for Amazon Prime members. ?? http://amzn.to/1GNu4Ci

Anyone done this? What do you miss? I have free NFL with Verizon, so I can watch football if want.

I grew up without a TV and don't feel like I missed anything. Might be nice to have less distractions in the home, and save a few bucks.

Pros? Cons?

We did it awhile back. Can still get most of the local networks where I live with an HD antenna. Between Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu we don't miss much.

Find a family member that still has cable and "borrow" their login you can still even stream most of the stuff you would get on cable. Between our immediate family we share accounts for just about every major sport package as well and can stream just about any game.

i have not had cable/satellite for about 5 years now. i use HD antenna to receive local networks and i have HULU and Netflix. i get my hunting video fix from youtube and vimeo and listening to podcasts. i agree with justinspicher that my kids grades are better off and there is less arguing to get them off the tv at night.

^^^ Second this, although I don't do Hulu because I don't want to pay to watch commercials. I also get NFL Rewind which is $100 for the year and you can watch any game after the fact in a condensed version where they cut out anything that isn't action so it only takes about 30 min to watch a game. I usually just go to a bar or watch broncos games on antenna. Fire TV stick is best all around, but the Chromecast is also useful for streaming other random stuff and mirroring your screen.

We ditched satellite about 6 years ago when we moved back to MT from bush Alaska. We just get the fastest internet speed available and do netflix and amazon prime. Can't say I miss it at all but I don't watch sports either. Everytime I get access to satellite tv I'm amazed at all of the crap. And expensive to boot. You'll find you do a lot more reading, etc w/o the time every night to veg out and surf the channels.

Thanks guys. Reaffirming my decision. Now to find the right streaming device. So far leaning toward the Fire.

Other than a movie about once a month we've not had any T.V. for 21 years...you and your kids will find much better things to do with your time.

I don't even remember how long ago I stopped paying for TV, other than Netflix. Over 10 years now. Think about what you watch and why. Most people just wade through all the crap on cable until they finally find something that interests them and then stick with it. You can do the same thing with Netflix or Hulu. An antenna will get you the local stuff and some sports.

I've been without cable for a couple years now. It's alright but sucks if you want to watch live sports sometimes. We actually have Google Fiber finally coming so we may do that for a year. Might be fun to download the entire internet in a second.

tempted but do love the golf chan. fox news fox business and rfd. but if dish pisses me off one more time. pow zoom

I would go with both the Fire Stick and Chromecast. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. I use my Fire Stick for most things, but when you want to do something like mirror your screen the chromecast works best. I also sometimes use my Chromecast for Netflix as it is pretty slick to use your phone instead of a remote, but also annoying at times.

I have been trying to do this as well but I need the big 10 network! or i am going to have a lot of trips to the bar.... Im thinking the bar might be cheaper at this point though! anyone know a good way to still watch sports without cable?

Buy a Roku for your tv. There are hundreds of free Internet based channels to watch. I have numerous hunting channels. The "pursuit" channel and "the Hunt" channel are both livestream....and totally free.
