I’ve tried just about everything in the scopes and hate to say that there’s no clear winner. Like you already know most crossbow scopes you’re stuck with one power. I have an Oracle X, works well most of the time but has poor glass, I also have a Garmin, works great, has good glass, stuck with one power, and the deal breaker for me, totally worthless in low light situations, can’t dim it enough. Tried a Sworovski Z6 2.5-15x56, and a Leupold VX5hd 3-15X56 both were excellent, good glass, very nice illuminated dot, awesome in low light, but the turret had very little vertical adjustment, had to use a jack plate, then the bow was top heavy and scope was too high for a good cheek weld. This year I’m trying a leupold mark 5, it has a 35mm tube, so I should enough vertical adjustment without a jack plate, but I will need to carry a range finder.
You will have to look at the pros and cons of each set up and pick the one that best suits your hunting style.
Really no right or wrong choice

I’ve been using the Oracle X for four years with no complaints. Simply range the red dot onto the deer and fire. The glass is average which is fine with me at crossbow shooting distances.

I used a red dot for a bit, I had one laying around that was not getting use and I liked it better than a scope. It was an eotech, maybe not the ideal one for that application but was the one I already owned that was sitting in the workbench. In the end I was a better compound bow shot so I sold the xbow. The ML I bought this year does not have sufficient eye relief for any of my current glass so that eotech is going back into service on it this weekend. For anything under 100 yards a red dot is real nice.

Were I to buy another crossbow it would almost certainly get a red dot.

A good budget option is the Athlon Talos 1.5-5X32 Crossbow scope. I've been using it for a couple of years and have been happy with it. Not anything fancy but it works for me.
