It's regional. I've killed them all over the country, even competing at the highest level (yes that used to be a thing haha).

Midwest and Northern states call them "kai-oat". The further west or east you go the long "e" and third syllable starts coming in as "kai-oat-ee".

Mostly kai-oat

But I use both.

I'm sure there's and algorithm in my head for why I use the one I do, but I'm unaware of what it is. Lol

Seem to remember a podcast interview with Dan Flores, author of the book American Coyote (great read), where he basically said if you're someone that would shoot one, it's two syllables. If you're not inclined to shoot them, it's three syllables. Sort of rural/urban divide.

There's "ki-yoat" people and there are "ki-yo-tee" people. As mentioned, it's regional. I work for a lot of people who are not from MT and there are "ki-yoat" people and "ki-yo-tee" people.

As far as the movie....its based on a saloon in new york city and a product of hollywood...."ki-yo-tee" people.

This is what I agree with. I don’t think it’s regional as others have mentioned.

Ki-yote for me. I'm originally from the very top of the U.P of Michigan tho and my friends there I hear them now and it hurts a little ..kai - YOOT. Yes...it hurts, and I hang my head. I don't want to believe I ever said that but I probably did.

I agree. I have friends that say that a lot Every time I hear it. It’s like nails on a chalkboard board. lol
That's how I feel when people see multiple female deer and say "I had 4 doe come by" instead of just adding the "s" in does.
