$1300 is a great deal! I think we paid $1800 earlier this year for a small from Costco (in-store). We originally wanted the medium, but the small has honestly been just fine for us and was a good entry point.

All of my backpacking meals this year were leftovers we freeze dried. Larger portions, and better tasting than anything else available on the shelf IMO.

We bought the small one a few months ago. Absolutely LOVE IT. Make sure you get the “oiled” compressor…just need to filter the oil every 30 cycles. Setup takes a little while to figure out. One thing to consider is this is a big appliance that takes up a fair amount of counter top space, & creates a fair amount of heat & makes noise while in use. I don’t think you would want it in your kitchen. We dedicated a table in our mud room & just leave it setup out there all the time…..Also Note: this Costco model includes a Bunch of HR Sealable Bags & oxygen absorbers making it essentially ready to prepare all your meals & have them ready to take to the field…..

We were initially looking at purchasing the medium size one, but the cost was hard to justify. We saw this a month ago while in Missoula visiting our kids in college and bought it at the sale price.

My wife has been freeze drying so much stuff it's making the cat thinking he's next!

Definitely worth the purchase, IMO. More uses than just backcountry meals.
