coon trapping are they worth anything to trap

I am trapping and relocating coons away from my house. Was thinking of putting an AirTag on one to see where he goes, if he comes back. I acknowledge this is a stupid idea but sometimes that doesn’t stop me.

How far away are you moving them?

That is an interesting idea. I would assume that little turd would find a way to remove either the collar or the tag, it probably wouldn't be too keen on wearing it. If you try it, you need to post some video of the whole process.

I would just put a .22 through the sucker and call it good. My opinion is they will either come back, or will end up being someone else's problem. I hate taking an animals life without eating it, but they can really cause a lot of problems to both houses and nature.

This.

I live in a rural enclave near a resort community. There is at least one ADC trapper that tells the clients not to worry about the catches; they release them where I live. I haven't had a chance to talk to him yet but I hope he's just "telling them what they want to hear" and dispatching them and not really relocating.

Relocating trapped animals is not lawful in my state.

ADC Trapper probably likes to relocate, then when they become somebody else's problem, he now has another client....

My brother-in-law would relocate them from his house, I told him to just shoot them.

I will admit, I shot one last year with my bow during whitetail season, and it made the worst sounding screams I have ever heard out of an animal. It actually made me feel bad. Now that I have had a little time to reflect on it, I would do it again if given the chance.

Only moved one so far but it was about 12 miles crow flying and on the other side of the Kansas River. He would have a heck of a swim.

I don't know if that would be far enough normally, but with the river offering so much opportunity for food, that's likely where they'd stop, maybe.
Years ago my brother killed a bear that had been trapped, ear tagged, and moved about 200 miles, he killed it right where they trapped it from just 2 months prior.
Animals have nothing but time on their paws. Walk, eat, sleep, repeat.

I live in a suburban neighborhood and a guy that lives back behind me is on TikTok with a name Raccoon Man or Raccoon Papa, something like that, and he hand feeds these guys and posts the videos. I feel bad killing them because it's not their fault this guy is a douchebag.

About 18 months ago I trapped one in the largest Havahart they make and it was bloating out the sides he was so fat. Neither of the two I've trapped have been the least bit pissed or aggressive, just open the door and they shimmy out and trot away.

I bet he's increasing carrying capacity to an absurd overage over time and they strip the land of songbirds, crayfish, frogs, etc. while they wait for that dude to get home from work.

I took out 18 this past deer season in SC. Hopefully it will reflect on the turkey hatch this year!

Has anyone here ever eaten a raccoon? Maybe it sounds gross. I thought the same until I thought about it. That said, black bear is excellent if prepared properly. Coons eat a similar diet (at least in places) and their build/body structure is pretty comparable.

Obviously, a “town” raccoon that was eating trash out of dumpsters probably wouldn’t be very good. A critter that was out wrecking a farmer’s corn field might not be horrible eating though……Maybe?

You hit the nail on the head, bears and raccoons taste great, if they're eating the right diet.
I've had several raccoons over the years, all came from AG land areas with good water sources, they all tasted very good.

Yes.

Its fine.

Tedious to debone tho.

Ground eats like anything else we hunt.

Roast whole carcass looks purple and eats like turkey.

The most palatable to regular folks (not us) would be to braise bone in and then remove bones before serving. Gravy or salsa, etc.
