I got bit by the long range bug this year. I’m 50 years old and have lived in Ohio my whole life, A non long range hunting state.

I hunted out west for large game for the first time this year. In preparation I went to a long range shooting range and was ringing steel with my trusty 30-06 at 500 yards. I was very fortunate to harvest a raghorn bull elk on my trip at 70 yards.

Now I’m hooked.

I don’t think at my age and honestly fair physical condition I’ll ever be a long range deep mountain hunter. But man I kind of want to get a rifle and set it up for distance. Even if just for steel. But I’ll hardly ever shoot it. So it needs to be for more than steel.

But I have a really accurate comfortable to shoot 30-06. I also have a .300 magnum that I’m afraid of and need to sell. The 7prc is intriguing. It gets me another 100 yards of similar energy as the 06’.

I feel like my 30-06 is all I’ll ever need. But that’s boring. But it shoots clover leafs with terminal ascent bullets.

Now the scope I really like is on sale. But if I only ever use my 06’ I don’t need another $1000 scope.

Man. I can’t be the only one ever in this place can I?

Just thinking out loud.

6.5 prc with a muzzle brake on it. Awesome for ringing steel or killing elk at long range. The 7prc kicks pretty good... For steel I shoot a 6.5 creedmore. If i was gona have one gun for both I would do the 6.5 PRC. Get a tikka, add the vertical grip to the factory stock. Throw a good bipod and good scope on it and you will be set for anything you want to do

My buddy bought a 6.5 PRC for the hunt. It worked well. It had a brake on it and the guide had him remove it however. Having shot with him I wasn’t surprised. That brake made it a cannon.

I’m leaning towards the 6.5 creedmore for a fun gun. I ordered the scope. Might go tikka. Or bergera. What are good rifle choices under $1500?

What scope is it that is on sale that you like?

Which is generally less expensive to shoot from a factory ammo standpoint (mid grade quality). 6.5 creedmore or 6.5 prc?
The 6.5C will be cheaper to shoot than the 6.5PRC. Ammo is cheaper and the barrel will last longer. The only advantage of the PRC is a couple hundred fps in velocity but that comes with increased recoil.

I don’t think I will ever hunt large game with anything but my -06’. So prc doesn’t get me anything but an empty wallet.

I used to say the same thing about my .300WM. Then I had a bad shoulder injury and surgery to repair it. I bought a 6.5C thinking I'd use it til my shoulder was 100% healed. My 6.5C has now killed 7 elk and 6 mule deer. My .300WM sits in the truck as my backup rifle.

Interesting. Forgive my slug gun state ignorance. I assumed a 6.5 Creedmoor was not enough for elk?

Luepold vx5 3-15 x44 with firefly and side focus. $300 off on Amazon, I’m used to paying $1250 to $1299.
You could get a cheaper scope that is actually made to dial elevation and windage with a zero stop, illumination, and a similar magnification range. Put it on a 1:8 twist 223 and shoot for a fraction of the price of 6.5 Creedmoor.

6.5C is enough to kill any animal in North America.

Depends on whether you want another gun.
280AI is a "perfected 30-06"
Same recoil (no more)
160 gr at nearly 3,000 ft per second if you want it.
It's easily a thousand yard round.
I wouldn't recommend this unless you hand load.

I have shot a 6.5 CM extensively but only up to 500 yd. It's fun to shoot and you'll notice about a 20% reduction in recoil from your ought six. Of course there's a corresponding change in terminal performance.

There are probably 60 cartridges chambered for 284 and for 264. Too many. Of course there's 277 but bullet availability is not quite as good. The right answer is probably in there somewhere.

Another question is where you want to be on barrel length. Don't make your choice, and then decide to chop your Barrel. Some cartridges lend themselves to short barrels, and some to Longer barrels. Taking a 264 Winchester and then deciding on a short barrel..... Well at least it would be interesting :)
