Considering switching from 270 win to 6.5 PRC or 6.5 CM

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a shot with H4831sc powder if can get my hands on it.

I don't want to get too much into the wildcat category since I'd want a cartridge with good component availability. 6.5CM seems to have passed that threshold. I'd like to get a low recoil cartridge and do more precision shooting during the off-season.

If you handload and have a 600y max, just keep the .270 and do a meticulous review of your entire reloading process to shore up consistency. You'll find something the rifle likes.

For CA my .270 likes the 124 hammer hunter over H4350, for everywhere else it really likes the 140 Berger Classic over H4831SC.

I'd have a hard time walking away from .270 for one of those. The 6.8 western is interesting but once again splitting hairs. My wife's Tikka shoots 3 touching holes with 150 bergers and rl-22

Pull the barrel and sell it for $60, buy a prefit in 6.5RPM or 6.5-06, and that should solve the issues you have brought up.

Then really make it a shooter and put an Agc composite stock on it. @merrillmtn is coming out with a mold for their tikka stocks. I’m surprised more people don’t talk about how much a stock affects a shooters ability to shoot well. For me it was absolutely night and day over the factory stock. @merrillmtn is supposed to send me a stock to test any day. Matt, you out there????? When I get it I’ll post a review of how it performed.

I bought that Grayboe that was in the classifieds for the Tikka. When you come get your stuff and settle up the storage fee you can look at it but not touch.

Seriously, @aman 6.5rpm, 6.5-06(ai) and you can swap barrels back and forth in three minutes.
Or a custom twist and throat 270win since you have stuff already.

Out of what you offered - I'd do the 6.5 CM (man that hurt to say). I would just re-barrel the Tikka also.

Now, if it were mine...
New 243 barrel on the Tikka, varmint contour, fast twist, heavy bullets. It would be a nice mate to that 'long action' you have and components are available.

Is an aftermarket stock really that much of an improvement over factory tikka stock? I haven't seen much data reflect this. I might consider this if there ie enough data to support this but otherwise some of these stocks are about as much as getting a new rifle.

If the factory stock fits you well then it may not be much of a benefit. For me even with the higher comb of a CTR stock I had significant ergonomic benefits upgrading to a KRG Bravo.

The vertical grip (more comfortable for me compared to the T3X vertical), higher comb (less neck strain), and adjustable butt (add-on) made the extra weight worth it for me.

So I found a really nice node around 53gr. Shoots really nice groups. But COAL is 3.753" when bullet is seated 0.020" away from lands. So now my issue is that I can't fit these loads in the mag.

I've looked into doing a AICS conversion but it seems like those magazines have feeding issues with Tikkas.

Do not be afraid to try the bergers a ways off the lands. There's usually a spot jammed 5-10k, 5k off, 20-25k off, 30-45k off and then back around 60-80k off. Now the depths further back aren't as tiny shooting, but they're usually wider depth nodes and more forgiving. I recently did a depth test with 109 bergers in my prs rifle and 40k and 140k both shot 1 hole groups at 100y. So there is a lot of options. Try a primer change if things aren't falling together, another thing that changes things is neck tension, can be adjusted using a bushing sizing die without expander.

Don’t get caught up in the BC and heavy bullet craze, the 270 was preforms best accuracy wise and killing wise with 130 gr bullet.

I don’t know if I could keep this spread with a 5 shot group. Seems like a lot of deviation on either side of the good load, but I had the same thing with the cutting edge bullets.

If you are between 6.5 CM and 6.5 PRC, I would definitely go with the 6.5 PRC. Difference in recoil is minimal. I’d rather have a little more recoil and better overall performance.

My 270 hated the Eld x most likely to slow of twist.
It really liking h4831 with the Berger 135 classic hunter.
